Do you have a passion for geotechnical engineering and ensuring the safety of disused colliery tips to protect the safety of the general public and the environment ?
Would you enjoy carrying out a key ‘on the ground’ role with the inspection and management of disused colliery tip sites; assessing safety issues, stability, drainage and geotechnical aspects ?

Our tips response team manage sites in Wales, England and Scotland, undertaking inspections, maintenance and management of sites within the ownership of the Coal Authority.
We also provide tip inspection services to third parties in the UK, and since 2020 have been a key partner with Welsh Government, Natural Resources Wales and Welsh Local Authorities, assisting with the implementation of a programme of safety inspections to all disused coal tips in Wales.
We are looking for enthusiastic individuals, who enjoy working outdoors in challenging environments and with a passion for public safety and an ambition to develop their geotechnical and civil engineering skills.

About The Role
You’ll be leading both an internal and external team of technical and project/programme delivery professionals to deliver the Coal Authority’s Inland Salinity Programme.
Working with the Programme Director you will deliver the agreed strategy to manage the risks and impacts of inland saline mine water through assessing the areas of risk and developing prioritised short and long-term solutions to protect critical water resources.
The development of solutions will require innovative thinking and a collaborative approach to explore opportunities to work with partners in industry and also regulators to add value to potential solutions.

- Develop and lead the delivery of the Coal Authority’s Nature Recovery plan, covering our nature and biodiversity objectives and our obligations across the three nations we serve, and leverage partnership opportunities to support the delivery of coalfield strategies and land transactions and management.
- Be a main point of contact for all nature recovery and catchment partnership enquiries and co-ordinate and communicate responses and engagement, liaising with partner agencies, key stakeholders and others to drive forward biodiversity gain and ecosystems management.
- Lead or support the development and delivery of a portfolio of partnership led physical enhancement projects to ensure they meet Coal Authority needs and objectives in conjunction with those of partners.
- Facilitate the feasibility, scoping, progression and blended financing processes associated with selecting, prioritising and working within partnership projects from development to delivery stage.
- Work closely within the sustainability and environmental compliance team to deliver our sustainability plan across the wider business.

About The Role
At the Coal Authority the Environment Department is responsible for addressing the issues of water pollution from abandoned coal and metal mines across Britain by developing new schemes and supporting the operation of over 75 existing mine water treatment schemes. There are three main delivery programmes covering sites spread across the former coal and metal mining areas in England, Wales and Scotland.
We are recruiting to fill a number of roles that sit within these programme delivery teams. Each role is responsible for day to day delivery of projects which can include the delivery of complex new water treatment schemes and refurbishments of our existing schemes.
You’ll be:

- Joining the Projects team and helping to manage a portfolio of varied projects to remediate contaminated water from both coal & historic metal mines through the development of new schemes as well as the refurbishment of existing assets.
- Typically leading and managing a number of projects, being responsible for delivering to agreed budgets and milestones.
- Working closely with our technical, operations, innovations & R&D teams to find the best solutions and maximise commercial opportunities for each scheme.
- Preparing project investment papers to obtain funding.
- Managing stakeholders and statutory bodies to obtain consents & permissions.

About The Role
This is a great opportunity to join a team that is connected to all areas of the Coal Authority. The financial accounting team is small but we cover a lot and we do it to a high standard.

We look after everything from payroll and payables to banking and receivables, as well as producing the financial statements and maintaining the asset register. You will have the opportunity to develop and gain significant experience but equally you still need to be comfortable processing transactions. You will be entirely responsible for the sales ledger and banking, and that involves all aspects from processing transactions to analysis and reporting.

We are a small team but we are a supportive team. Every team member has a role to play and can influence what we do and how we work with colleagues across the organisation.

Role location: Hybrid - Mansfield - Activity-based onsite (two days in the office per week).
