Once selected for the Claims Specialist position in SSA, you will contribute to the Agency's mission through direct and personal service to the public. Serves as a Senior Computer Assistant and LAN Administrator in the Office of Disability Adjudication and Reviews' Hearing Offices (HO). Provides analytical, technical and administrative support, which includes independent decision making, for the HO Local Area Network (LAN) system. Performs expert troubleshooting. Serves as the primary adviser to management in the use of automated data processing (ADP) systems with responsibility for oversight, management and maintenance of ADP systems in a multi-operating system environment and as liaison with vendor representatives. This environment entails programming and processing, as well as administration and management of word processing, data processing, telecommunications, local area network, batch processing, database management/programming, electronic spreadsheet processing/programming and security. As a Senior Computer Assistant, the incumbent has primary responsibility over systems operations and automated case processing within the office.

This program provides substantive, developmental work assignments that prepare incumbents for placement in a target position in one of the occupational series covered by the Legal and Kindred Occupational Group.

The incumbent will be given orientation to SSA and basic orientation in the functions and operations of the organization. Some of the of the duties may include:

Claims Specialists conduct interviews with the public to obtain, clarify, and verify information about initial and continuing eligibility for retirement, survivors, disability, health insurance benefits, and eligibility for supplemental security income including State supplements. In addition, they resolve discrepancies, clarify issues and make final decisions for initial and post-entitlement for benefits and payments; adjudicate and authorize entitlement or disallowance actions at all levels of difficulty and complexity under programs administered by SSA; and use state of-the-art technology to access and update claims information. • Serves as a senior investigative analyst in the Major Case Unit supporting the development of complex criminal and civil investigations and related projects and initiatives.
• Access, collect, examine, and analyze investigative data and evidence, synthesize results, and present conclusions.
• Independently research, reconstruct events, establish possible criminal associations, detect trends, and develop case specific subject profiles.

• Serves as the authoritative source for all electrical guidance and consultation for SSA facilities at headquarters and nationwide, including the largest most modern and sophisticated computer center.
• Plans, develops, and leads agency wide reviews and studies of a range of electrical engineering services including reviews, studies, standards, procedures, feasibility studies, design and construction reviews, cost estimating and problem solving.
• Oversees quantitative studies of complex processes involving headquarters, field and regional offices, program service centers, data operations centers, state agencies and other federal departments, which impact on other related operations.

• Prepares cost benefit analyses for budgetary purposes and for discussion and approval with GSA and architectural/engineering consultants. Approves plans and specifications in the electrical discipline.
• Prepares standard and technical reports, administrative memos and letters and other forms of correspondence.

• Serves as the principal technical advisor to the AC/DAC in supporting major budget initiatives.
• Provides analytical, consultative, writing, editing, presentation and advisory services to the AC/DAC and agency executives on visible/complex matters impacting formulation, presentation and execution of agency program and administrative budgets.
• Provides input to the AC and DAC with regard to budget presentation utilizing authority on financial management, budgeting, marketing, and communication.
• Prepares background papers, confidential reports, briefing materials and recommendations from the AC/DAC or DCBFM to high-level agency officials and the Commissioner that involve SSA budget and program issues.

• The duties at this level are characteristic of the full performance level. Management will gradually broaden work assignments so that the trainee can perform all the duties of the full performance level.

• Ensures proper coordination and cooperation within DMLS teams, and with other teams not under the incumbent's immediate supervision.
• Serves as the primary contact for all managers and staff throughout SSA concerning all ongoing and special projects involving mail and transportation activities.
• Performs oversight of the SSA GSA Fleet of vehicles. Provides efficient and economical transportation services to support individual, unit or group utilization throughout SSA Headquarters and regions using government owned or leased vehicles.

CSRs conduct interviews to determine the nature of the caller's question or issue; explain technical information, gather facts, evaluate evidence, and take action to resolve problems relating to all Social Security programs.

Once selected for the Customer Service Representative position in SSA, you will contribute to the Agency's mission through direct service to the public. As the first point of contact, you are responsible for assisting beneficiaries or inquirers in person, by telephone or in writing to provide information on SSA laws, rules and regulations and Medicare Insurance Programs. This includes obtaining information in order to determine eligibility and entitlement for programs administered by SSA, and using automation tools to access and update information about claims or potential eligibility.
