In this position, you will:

The Conservator (Costumes and Textiles) serves as a part of a team of conservators in the conservation and preservation of textile and costume collections within the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC).

In this position, you will:

• Work with curators and exhibition teams on the care and display of textile and costume materials and participate in an active exhibition and rotation schedule.
• Treat, care for, preserve, and research all NMAAHC textile and costume-based materials.  Responsible for independently designing, proposing, documenting and completing appropriate conservation treatments on a wide variety of costume and textile materials within the collection. 
• Provide written guidance and input on unit guidelines and procedural guidelines regarding preservation parameters for handling, storage, transport, IPM, disaster prevention and recovery, risk assessment and management, and collections care strategies, plans and goals.
• Engage with the curator, and/or the artist, studio assistant or estate to foster relationships that support the long-term care and display of works in the collection.  
• Work with collection managers to assist with the planning of appropriate storage or textile and costume materials.  Ensure that the collection, whether in view, in storage or on loan, is housed in safe environments to minimize shock and vibration, and that environmental levels are maintained.  Identify and explain storage and handling improvements to staff and interns, as well as demonstrate and construct improved housing and handling.

This position will be hired under STRI, with a duty station at the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC.

This position serves as the Information Technology Specialist, Data Manager/Enterprise Architecture (IT Specialist (DATAMGT), for ForestGEO. The Information Technology Specialist, Data Manager/Enterprise Architecture (IT Specialist/DATAMGT) will focus on the creation and implementation of a network-wide data information system to support the program’s scientific mission of conducting research on forest dynamics.         

In this position, you will:

• Develop and implement data pipelines and workflows as new enhancements to the existing data structure.
  
  
• Create data management solutions and informatic workflows, implement data standards, and develop data architectures needed for data acquisition, use, and storage. Use best practices in web development and database applications, ensure progress on data system design, development, and maintenance, and serve as a technical representative on related contractual services.
  
  
• Conduct in-depth technical analyses of alternatives and work closely with researchers to develop and implement appropriate software tools, new workflows, and either take appropriate action or recommend new kinds of calculations and modeling scenarios which are required for cutting edge research.

• Develop and provide training to researchers and partners on the ForestGEO data system and serve as a liaison with global partners.

• Collecting, analyzing, and managing data using molecular genetic laboratory techniques and equipment.
• Conducting laboratory-based sample processing, including fungal isolation and culturing using aseptic techniques, routine molecular tasks (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR, DNA visualization, sequencing, genotyping), and next generation sequencing library preparation.
• Supporting scientific, programmatic, and data management, within the Molecular Ecology lab at SERC, as required.
• Leading the implementation of field and greenhouse studies, including plant species identification and collection, measurement of environmental parameters, seed preparation, experimental set-up and monitoring, and data entry.
• Assisting in the training of other technicians, interns, and volunteers and manage and organize daily field and laboratory activities at SERC.

The Animal Keeper position is located at the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI), either at the National Zoological Park (NZP) in Washington, DC or at the Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) in Front Royal, VA. This position may rotate between Animal Programs and the Commissary as part of a training program or be reassigned to one of the three animal care departments depending on animal care requirements. 

In this position you will: 

• Receive training in animal health and welfare, monitoring animals for symptoms of illness, injuries or other unusual conditions.
• Engage with visitors by discussing animal natural history, conservation programs, natural habitats, status of animals in the wild, care and feeding of animals, and other topics of interest.
• Ensure the proper care, feeding, exhibition, and propagation of a collection of wild and exotic animals, many of which are rare and endangered.
• Receive training in measurement and preparation of food items and maintenance of sanitary conditions around feeding areas.
• Clean animal enclosures by hosing, sweeping, scrubbing, raking, and removing manure, unconsumed food, and other refuse and keeps service areas and adjacent public areas clean.
• Maintain enclosure materials by trimming and watering plants, replacing nesting and bedding material in accordance with instructions provided by higher level personnel.
• Receive training and developmental assignments in the receipt, storage, inspection, inventory, preparation and issuance of food and dietary supplements, forage, and bedding materials.
• Unload and store food supplies and as instructed and under close supervision prepare animal diets according to standard procedures.
• Assemble food in properly marked containers and deliver or issue food to caretakers.
• Perform other duties and development assignments as assigned.
