Project Overview

This project aims to develop a real-time blood analysis and diagnostic platform using an integrated microfluidic chip. This platform uses precision microfluidic technology to process and profile the biological activity of white blood cells which is related to a host of inflammatory conditions ranging from diabetes, sepsis to leukemia. The platform developed will enable point-of-care diagnosis of diseases and this project will accelerate the platform from bench to bedside through the development, deployment and testing of clinical samples.

This Engineering position offers a rare opportunity to bridge the gap between laboratory discovery of new technologies and real-world implementation of clinical deployment and testing.

Responsibilities

The engineer is responsible for the design, prototype, manufacturing and testing of the medical device. This involves the use of with computer-aided design prototyping, setting specifications and assembly of mechnical/electrical components, testing and deployment of device for field testing.

Responsibilties include:

- To work closely with a team of clinical, mechanical/software engineers and data scientist for the medical device design and prototyping. Gather feedbacks on prototype designs by end-users.

- To Validate designs by analysing data gathered from component or system level testing. Use benchmarking techniques to characterise component and device performance.

- To ensure proper documentation of design history files and standardization of data storage for reports, presentations, technical and administrative documents.

- To source for vendors and components to ensure manufacturability and cost of medical device.

- To support the team for maintenance of equipment, inventory and purchases.

Requirements

- Bachelors/Masters or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical Engineering, or a relevant field with experience developing and supporting embedded systems.

- Minimum Bachelor's or Master's degree with 2+ years of work experience or Ph.D. with 0+ years of experience.

- Rapid prototyping experience in areas such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, injection molding, microcontroller/microprocessor programming and relevant skills in embedded system.

Project Overview

The Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) Centre invites applications for Postdoctoral Associate positions in the area of crystallization science and particle engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to work on the design and engineering of advanced microparticle-based pharmaceutical drug products comprising soft (polymer/hydrogel) matrices containing crystalline drug particles, typically made using microfluidic methods. Project Overview

The Antimicrobial Resistance Interdisciplinary Research Group (AMR IRG) is a unique translational research and entrepreneurship program aimed at solving the growing threat of resistance to antimicrobial drugs. In synch with the National Strategic Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance, the AMR IRG was launched in January 2018 as a research programme funded by the National Research Foundation, under its Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) programme.

AMR IRG is made up of biologists, engineers, and clinicians from MIT and Singapore, at career stages ranging from student to postdoctoral researcher to research scientist, all of whom work closely with a core team of research specialists. The group shares a beautiful state-of-the art research facility and is united by a commitment to providing a supportive intellectual environment where members can learn, grow, and contribute to solving a pressing societal problem.

Optimization of antimicrobial use was is identified as a top priority in combating the rise of antimicrobial resistance. Yet, when one seeks medical care for an infection, clinical tools are lacking to rapidly determine whether the infection is bacterial or viral. Multi-plex nucleic acid tests to detect common pathogenic bacteria and viruses from bodily fluids are commercially available and are trusted by clinicians. However, the cost of these tests and the turnaround times required (longer than an office visit) limit how fequently they are used. A team in AMR IRG is working to develop a multi-plex protein panel and test that can address this gap while retaining performance metrics that are required for clinical adoption. We are seeking a creative, curious, motivated postdoctoral researcher with strong organizational skills to join this effort.

Project Overview

We are seeking one or more graduate research interns (ideally full time students currently pursuing a PhD degree) in computer science to join the “Towards an Immersive Workplace” project. This project is part of Task “T1” of a five-year, ambitious research program on "Mens, Manus and Machina—How AI Empowers People, Institutions and Cities in Singapore (M3S)."

Successful applicants for this position will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research that builds new capabilities for AI-enhanced human-robot interaction, with a special focus on supporting efficient and collaborative spatial/3D sensing and comprehension in industrial environments, such as airport tarmacs and logistics warehouses. The end goal is to build exciting new capabilities that allow robots and humans to work together, interactively and in close proximity, with the spatial sensing helping agents embedded in robots understand and situate human instructions, queries and commands, issued naturally in untethered, field settings.

The research intern, working part-time (10-16 hours per week) will be specifically involved in the development of new, energy-efficient and reliable spatial sensing technologies, such as LIDAR (3D). The goal is to allow teams of humans and robots, working in close proximity in a common physical environment, to achieve appropriate spatial awareness. The research will focus on addressing challenges such as (i) interference between multiple LIDAR sensors, when operating in a shared physical environment, (ii) optimized sharing of LIDAR-sensed point cloud data among collaborating peers, and (iii) resource-efficient augmentation of LIDAR sensing via use of additional cheaper sensors (e.g., RGB and thermal cameras). These techqniues will progressively be combined with additional research, being developed in complementary efforts within the overall T1 project, that tackles topics such as non-obtrusive human attention capture and efficient multi-modal DNN comprehension for human instructions, to support more accurate understanding of human instructions and preferences, whether explicit or implicit.

Project Overview

SMART CAMP (Critical Analytics for Manufacturing Personalized-Medicine) is a interdisciplinary research programme in Singapore (CREATE international research campus and innovation hub) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). SMART CAMP addresses key technology bottlenecks in cell therapy manufacturing: (i) critical quality attributes of safe, effective cell therapy products; and (ii) integrated process analytics to monitor and modulate those attributes. While cell therapies are poised to transform healthcare for both the industry and the patient, there remain many outstanding scientific and technical challenges to significant global impact that this R&D programme addresses. This high-impact focus includes measurement and feedback control of processing parameters (process analytic technologies, or PAT) that contribute to cell viability and function during cell proliferation, and the measurement at intermediate and final steps of the cell product properties correlated with positive therapeutic outcomes (critical quality attributes, or CQA).

This interdisciplinary team comprises engineers, biologists, clinicians, manufacturing, and data analytics experts from multiple MIT academic units, and multiple Singapore-based universities, research centres of excellence, and hospitals who are experienced at translational demonstrations of technologies in safety-regulated industries such as cell therapies.

CAMP’s unique, enabling and cross-cutting capabilities include cell and clinical biology, microfluidics, real-time optics and spectroscopies, 3D-printed devices, process analytics, data analytics, and bioinformatics. This programme will demonstrate these approaches required of cell-based personalized medicine through three translational testbeds (three Flagship Projects), ultimately facilitating access for more patients to life-saving, approved cell therapies for currently intractable health challenges. These flagship projects will address allogeneic and autologous cell therapy products, including but not limited to cell sources including adult stem/progenitor cells and immune cells for treatment of specific cancers, tissue degeneration, and autoimmune diseases.

Responsibilities

SMART CAMP research focuses on multiple immune cell types and targeted indications, including CAR-T cells for cancer therapeutics. Our experts in immunology at the basic and translational levels work on the development of both the cells’ critical quality attributes (CQA) and culture systems’ process analytic technologies (PAT). Successful applicants for this position will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge, interdisciplinary projects that aim to dramatically rethink how people and AI systems will work together in the future. To do this, the project seeks to build a strong scientific foundation for how AI can augment (as opposed to replace) humans.

One important goal of the project is to develop a rich taxonomy of activities that can be performed by human-AI teams. Like mapping the plants and animals on an unexplored continent, the work will involve cataloging many (a) activities and (b) possible human-computer processes for performing these activities.

To do this, we will develop knowledge bases that include (1) descriptions of many different types of activities and processes, and (2) classifications of these descriptions into taxonomies that range from very general types of activities to very specific ones.

Then, using these knowledge bases, we will develop AI tools to automatically generate promising ways of combining humans and AI systems to perform different tasks. Project Overview

We are seeking one or more Postdoctoral Associates, Research Engineers, or Research Scientists in social sciences or related fields to join a project on “Designing human-AI teams.” The project is part of a five-year research program on "Mens, Manus and Machina—How AI Empowers People, Institutions and Cities in Singapore (M3S)."

Successful applicants for this position will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge, interdisciplinary projects that aim to dramatically rethink how people and AI systems will work together in the future. To do this, the project seeks to build a strong scientific foundation for how AI can augment (as opposed to replace) humans.

One important goal of the project is to develop a rich taxonomy of activities that can be performed by human-AI teams. Like mapping the plants and animals on an unexplored continent, the work will involve cataloging many (a) activities and (b) possible human-computer processes for performing these activities.

To do this, we will develop knowledge bases that include (1) descriptions of many different types of activities and processes, and (2) classifications of these descriptions into taxonomies that range from very general types of activities to very specific ones.

Then, using these knowledge bases, we will develop AI tools to automatically generate promising ways of combining humans and AI systems to perform different tasks. In the long run, we believe these tools will help rapidly (a) identify use cases for new AI capabilities, (b) specify effective processes and task allocations to humans and computers in a given situation, and (c) identify innovative ways to combine people and AI to solve business and societal problems.

The T6 team is led by distinguished scholars, including Profs. Thomas Malone, Daniela Rus, and Abdullah Almaatouq from MIT; and Profs. Marcelo Ang and Bryan Low from the National University of Singapore; and will be assisted by Prof. Archan Misra from Singapore Management University.

Project Overview

The "Mens, Manus and Machina—How AI Empowers People, Institutions and Cities in Singapore (M3S)" project is driven by the goal of investigating the nature of work, redefining our relationship with technology, and exploring how institutions can adapt to foster livability, sustainability, innovation, and social welfare.

Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that aim to develop state-of-the-art AI to create future smart cities. The Postdoctoral Associate is in the T7 project for the five-year M3S program in SMART. The SMART team seeks to advance the frontier of AI research, apply it to society and cities, and demonstrate the concrete social impacts of the AI algorithms with broad public acceptance in Singapore.

Specifically, the T7 project concerns the design of human-machine systems for the scheduling and allocation of valuable resources in ways that accommodate and optimize for the needs and capabilities of both humans and machines; it uses the stand allocation process at Changi airport as a paradigm of a broad set of other potential application contexts.

The problem of scheduling and allocating valuable resources appears in numerous contexts (e.g., transportation, health, public services, logistics) and scales. Many of these contexts share a set of common features. First, decisions regarding scheduling and allocation must be made in the face of uncertainty about the amount and timing of demand for these resources. This, in turn, means that plans must be updated dynamically as new information comes in. Moreover, a variety of stakeholders are typically involved and contend for the limited available resources, so that decision-makers must look for compromise solutions that “optimize”, in some way, the use of the resources, while balancing, to the extent possible, the requirements, priorities and social, economic, or demographic characteristics of these stakeholders. In short, these are complex problems involve multiple agents making multi-attribute decisions in a dynamic environment in the presence of uncertainty. Increasingly, AI- and ML-based tools are being brought by large organizations to bear on these problems and complement the expertise and experience of human managers and operators and the traditional decision-making support offered by more traditional (often large-scale) optimization models and algorithms. Optimizing human-machine interactions, training of humans and anticipating and mitigating potential societal, ethical, privacy and transparency issues related to these new tools are all critical aspects of the design of this next generation of scheduling and resource allocation systems.

Project Overview

The Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) IRG is a translational research and entrepreneurship program that tackles the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance. Project Overview

Rapid and sensitive detection of low-abundance pathogens is required for many fields, including infectious disease, environment surveillance and food safety monitoring. However, the low abundance (<10/mL) of pathogens in large-volume crude samples critically limits the detection performance of even the most sensitive technique like digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR). Therefore, an efficient enrichment of low-abundance pathogens from crude samples is critical to improving downstream detection. Prof. Jongyoon Han (Principal Investigator under SMART AMR and CAMP IRGs) and Dr. Yaoping Liu (Senior Postdoctoral Associate under Prof. Han) team has developed an efficient electrostatic microfiltration (EM)-based sample processing to realize the detection of low abundance bacteria (<10 CFU) from an ultra-large volume (as high as 500 mL). Recently, the team is working on various samples to expand the impact and has received quite a few collaboration requests from both academic institute and company. There requires some optimization/customization of the system for different samples and interfaces with different downstream detection platforms.

Responsibilities

This Research Engineer will join the abovementioned optimization of the EM-based processing of different samples including wastewater, soil sediment or clinical biofluids to interface with downstream detectors including digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR), nanopore sequencing. Once the workflow optimized, the Research Engineer will perform the sample preparation collaborating with different groups under instruction of the supervisor. The goal is to significantly (by at least 2-3 orders of magnitudes) increase the detection sensitivity and decrease the assay time by implementing better sample separation and concentration. This topic is focused and pursued in both the fundamental research and industry areas. There will be opportunity to go to international conference for exchange and collaboration enhancement.

Requirements

• Minimum Degree in bioengineering, biological science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and other relevant background
• Strong hands-on ability to carry out bacterial/fungal culture-related wetlab and molecular biology (PCR and sequencing) processes. The project supervisor will give a training about the above processes, but a previous experience is a bonus.
• Hands-on ability to carry out the micro/nano device operation is a bonus, and will be the mainly training direction upon joinning the project.
• Good communication skills to work with researchers from biological / clinical / engineering backgrounds.
• Responsibility to fulfill complete experimental records, timely analyze experimental data and report to the supervisor.
• Patience to run biological / engineering replicates to optimize and evaluate the workflow.
• Able and committed to work in Singapore.
