The Associate Director for Patient Care Services is the Nurse Executive for this facility and its associated community-based outpatient clinics. He/she is responsible for the practice of nursing 24/7 by registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, and allied health staff (LPNs, NAs, etc.) regardless of line authority. He/she has direct line authority over Nursing Practice, Sterile Processing Services, Medical Center Education Department, and Nursing Informatics and Technology. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services will exercise final authority and approval over nursing job descriptions, nursing care policies and procedures; nursing standards of patient care, treatment, and services; standards of nursing practice; nurse staffing plans; and standards to measure, assess, and improve patient outcomes. He/she will ensure that all registered nurses, advance practice nurses, and licensed practical nurses are licensed, certified, and/or registered upon employment, and thereafter. He/she will ensure a competency process is in place to evaluate individual practice, as well as a review process for annual performance ratings. The Associate Director for Patient Care Services and other nursing leaders participate with leaders from the Executive Leadership Team, management, medical staff, clinical areas, and administrative areas in strategic planning and decision-making processes. Nursing leaders in all services are permitted input into nursing policy development and may participate in the Associate Director for Patient Care Services Administrative staff meetings, encompassing nursing management and staff development. Appropriate delegation of nursing activities is accomplished to nurse leaders in all services. Incumbent will be self-directed in completing on-going education. Will ensure the appropriate staff has completed annual competency checklists.

Functions/Scope of Assigned Duties:
Administrative Functions: The MHSL Chief is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, implementing, controlling, and refining a comprehensive patient management/clinical support/administrative programs which provide services and technical counsel necessary to meet clinical, procedural, legal, and administrative standards relating to the care and treatment of inpatients and outpatients to achieve maximum utilization of patient care resources in a cost-effective, efficient, and timely manner. The MHSL Chief provides a climate in which clinicians can care for patients with an awareness of the administrative implications of his/her actions. The MHSL Chief must possess a broad clinical and administrative scope to meet the needs of this large, complex patient population and to integrate service line functions with those of other service lines as well as with other VA entities within and outside the local Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN). The MHSL Chief is responsible for implementing VHA Central Office Directives and regulations. As a Service Line Manager, the MHSL Chief is tasked with providing active leadership and active decision making for the
organization; is responsible for strategic planning and the budget processes; is responsible for improvement of performance coordination and implementation; and is responsible for coordinating facility wide activities. The MHSL Chief actively maintains a collaborative working relationship with other facility leaders to ensure full support and coordination among the programs supervised. The MHSL Chief is responsible for ensuring that services provided meet the standards set by accrediting agencies which govern the quality of care for this medical center. In conjunction with other service line managers, the MHSL Chief works to assure that issues and deficiencies are corrected according to standards.
Clinical Functions: Performs all duties and responsibilities of a staff psychiatrist. Duties include but are not limited to the following: admission/discharge, treatment and professional direction of inpatient care or care on specialized units; outpatient care; and psychiatric consultations. Inpatient care includes care on acute and long-term units. Specialized care units include residential treatment programs for posttraumatic stress disorders, substance abuse, and dual diagnoses. Must be clinically competent to perform examinations, diagnosis, and therapeutic treatment. Must be effective in handling psychiatric emergencies. Must provide proper documentation in patient records. Must be effective in teaching (patient education and co-workers). Must be effective in planning and using administrative judgment. Must have sound decision-making skills. The psychiatrist must ensure that regular contact is maintained with the patient as clinically indicated as long as ongoing care is required. The psychiatrist must review and reconcile each patient's psychiatric medications on a regular basis. The psychiatrist must collaborate with the Suicide Prevention Coordinator in the facility to support the identification of those who have survived suicide attempts and others at high risk and to ensure that they are provided with close monitoring and enhanced care. The clinician is also responsible for coordinating development of the Veteran's treatment plan, incorporating input from the Veteran (and, when appropriate, the family/significant others), monitoring progress and coordinating revisions to the treatment plan when necessary. The psychiatrist is also responsible for communicating with the Veteran (and the Veteran's family/significant others, when appropriate) about the treatment plan, and for addressing any of the Veteran's problems or concerns about the Veteran's care. The MHSL Chief must also provide professional direction for, and participate in, the treatment team.

The Gastroenterology (GI) Section at the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center is recruiting an outstanding gastroenterologist to lead an excellent Gastroenterology Section.
