Position overview
The School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics (SLLL) is seeking to enhance the strong research profile and successful teaching program in Classical Studies through the hire of a four-year fixed-term Level B Lecturer (Teaching and Research, equivalent to Assistant Professor level in US system) to the ANU Centre for Classical Studies. The appointee will have an active research agenda in any field of Classical Studies, relative to opportunity, and will be expected to bring expertise and intellectual distinction to the Centre and the School.
The Centre for Classical Studies, housed in the School of Literature, Languages, and Linguistics, is a major international centre for the study of Ancient Greece and Rome. The Centre teaches three undergraduate majors – Ancient Greek, Latin, and Classical Studies (in translation) – covering Greek and Roman language, literature, history, art, culture, and society from the Bronze Age to the Early Middle Ages. It is also home to the ANU Classics Museum, a collection of more than 600 artefacts from the ancient Mediterranean world, with a special focus on objects illustrating daily life. Current staff research interests include: ancient Greek technology and religion; Roman political history; late Republican and imperial literature; Greek and Roman music; the literature and culture of Greece in the Roman empire; Classical reception; and the world of Late Antiquity.
The successful candidate will be supported to apply for Australian Research Council grants during their tenure, such as a Discovery Early Career Researcher Award or a Future Fellowship. They will take on the teaching of a recently awarded Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellow in the School and will be expected to teach Latin language and literature at all levels and to contribute to the Classical Studies major. This may include courses such as CLAS1005: Rome: The Story of an Empire; CLAS3002: Life, Love, and Loss in Ancient Greece and Rome; and CLAS3100: Remembering and Forgetting in the Roman Empire. The ability to teach Ancient Greek would be an advantage. The appointee will be expected to contribute to the Centre for Classical Studies’ outreach and engagement programme by giving talks to schools, teachers, and community groups.
The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) is one of seven Colleges at ANU. The College, which is structured into two main research schools, offers degrees in more than 20 discipline areas and excels in research across the creative arts, humanities and social sciences. The College has a substantial international research presence and is a major source of national policy advice. Our academic staff are internationally recognised for their research, and 57 are members of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, the Academy of the Social Sciences of Australia, or both. We also host 13 Australian Research Council Future Fellows and three ARC Laureates. A hub of vibrant activity, we host more than 270 lectures, concerts and exhibitions each year, most of which are open to the public. Our students, staff and graduates come from more than 60 nations, bringing a diversity of perspective to campus life.
Key accountability areas
The appointee will be located in the ANU Centre for Classical Studies in the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics. They will collaborate closely with colleagues in the Centre under the management of the Centre’s Head. They may also collaborate with other areas across the School and University, in particular English, Language Studies, Linguistics, History, Art History, and Archaeology (depending on area of expertise). The Lecturer is expected to contribute actively and positively to the ANU Centre for Classical Studies, School and College, in all areas of research, teaching, and service. They will contribute to undergraduate teaching and to the supervision of Honours theses, and may also contribute to the supervision of MPhil and PhD theses. They will conduct research of international standing in Classical Studies, publishing in the peer-reviewed literature. The appointee is expected to be active in professional service within the Centre for Classical Studies (including in relation to the Classics museum and the wider Classics community), SLLL and the University, as well as nationally and internationally in their respective disciplines.
The appointee will be expected to take up the position on July 1, 2024. This position is based in Canberra.
