The ideal candidate should:

• Preferably 7 to 10+ years of relevant experience, providing assurance and advisory services
• Possess a degree in Accountancy or equivalent (CPA/CIA preferred) and a minimum of 6 years’ experience in business controls, commercial internal audit or external audit in an international public accounting firm and/or a reputable multinational company
• Preferably have a good understanding of internal controls, Generally Accepted Auditing Standards and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles coupled with experience in a variety of industries such as real estate, hospitality, healthcare, manufacturing industries; knowledge of treasury operations
• Demonstrate strong leadership capabilities and be responsible for leading audit, advisory and other ad-hoc assignments and ensure quality and timely delivery. This would include executing fieldwork where needed
• Possess excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to present ideas and results to technical and non-technical audiences, which include audit committees and senior management
• Have good communication, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as the ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Provide coaching and over-sight to team members and proactively identify staff development opportunities
• Possess strong project and client management abilities
• Be willing to travel locally or regionally

In this role, a typical day will include:

• Provide assistance in the quarterly and annual intangible impairment review/testing procedures; maintaining Sarbanes-Oxley Act processes for FRA Operations global controls; and various monthly/quarterly reporting activities for the FRA Operations.
• Provide accounting / reporting support as SPOC/Subject Matter Expert for identified function, region, and for identified areas of technical accounting.
• Responsible for accounting compliance with IFRS as interpreted by Group and includes the following:
  • Monitoring developments in IFRS and US GAAP and setting accounting policies for FRA Operations in conjunction with Group and communicating these policies to the local entities, FRA Operations, Business Units (BU’s) function, etc.
  • Investigating financial accounting policy issues, recommending, and implementing actions as appropriate.
  • Providing technical accounting support to local entities, regions and functions (in line with the responsibility matrix) for complex / significant matters, preparing / reviewing appropriate accounting documentation (Accounting Position Paper) in line with matrix for approval of accounting issues.
  • Responsibility for impairment reviews (critical review of data provided by other functions, challenging assumptions, meeting with business partners, preparation of supporting documentation, coordination of reviews by management and PwC and following up on any review issues).
  • Reviewing potential Business, Development & Licensing (BD&L) for FRA Operations deals in order to assess the accounting treatment under IFRS, preparation of accounting documentation for the deals / review and sign off accounting documentation.
  • Reviewing potential acquisitions, to provide the M&A team with input on any accounting implications, preparing purchase price accounting and relevant acquisition models for completed FRA Operations acquisitions, obtaining appropriate sign offs as required under Sarbanes-Oxley.
  • Maintaining the various requirements of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act for the FRA Operations in conjunction with established processes.
  • Responsible for analyzing the FRA Operations and balance sheet, cash flow, other operating income and expense, intangible assets and provisions, and other elements associated with the specific activities of functions supported by FRA Operations TA (including product costing and development) and driving improvements in the process and presentation of the output.
  • Rolling out improvements in the process and documentation to the Regions and local entities as appropriate.
  • Supporting IFRS to US GAAP conversion readiness.
  • Preparing and/or reviewing training material content for FRA, including instructing assigned sessions.

Director, Accounting

The Director of Accounting will be responsible for all facets of our internal accounting operations, including the fiscal close cycle, internal financial reporting, externally reported disclosures, and policy and procedure development in compliance with a SOX internal controls environment.

The Director of Accounting will work closely with the leaders within the Controllership group to ensure timely and accurate internal reporting under GAAP, while adhering to company internal control procedures.

Additionally, the Director of Accounting will continuously evaluate systems and procedures to ensure that the operations of the department are being run in the most efficient and effective manner and aligned with company objectives.

Finally, the Director of Accounting will be responsible for building a high-achieving team that embodies the philosophies of our company culture.

Key Responsibilities

1.     Period-end Close

• Manage the period-end financial close process (fiscal month, quarter and year-end).
• Oversee the General Accounting, Fixed Assets and Lease Accounting teams.
• Ensure the process for reviewing various period-end account reconciliations and journal entries are accurate and complete. 
• Prepare and/or review various analyses to identify unusual activity and ensure transactions are properly accounted for, including account variance analyses, balance sheet and income statement fluctuation analyses, etc.
• Provide requested support to Tax and Financial Reporting and adhere to external reporting timeline.
• Understand complex issues and work closely with Technical Accounting to ensure proper treatment thereof.
• Facilitate quarterly review and annual audit process. Ensure timely and accurate information flow between the Accounting team, external auditors and Internal Audit.

2. SOX Compliance

• Maintain ownership of SOX key controls related to owned accounts and processes.
• Facilitate both internal and external audits ensuring complete, timely and accurate responses to information requests. Coordinate with internal or external auditors related to owned accounts and processes.
• Continuously evaluate SOX controls in light of changing systems/processes and work with Internal Audit to identify and implement necessary control changes.
• Improve internal control environment to more efficiently monitor transaction risk and financial exposure.

3. Process Improvement

• Review existing processes, structures, and systems to identify improvement opportunities with a focus on simplification, standardization and optimization, especially the reduction of manual, Excel-based activities.
• Help drive the reduction of the close timeline by assessing and streamlining close-related activities.
• Evaluate, develop, implement and monitor accounting and operational policies and procedures for owned areas, with an emphasis on improving accuracy and timeliness, reducing risk and strengthening compliance.
• Assist in assessing the impact from and implement the required changes to systems, process, policies and procedures due to new accounting standards, regulatory changes, changes in business strategy, cross-departmental initiatives and other operational changes.
• Manage and/or support the implementation of on-going process improvement initiatives.   

4. Coaching and Team Development

• Provide continuous training and leadership to Shake Shack Accounting Team and cultivate an open environment that encourages learning and sharing of ideas, while upholding company core values.
• Perform quarterly check-ins and annual performance reviews for direct report.
• Establish goals for direct reports that are aligned with overall department and company objectives.
• Manage team workload, structure and staffing to ensure balance and alignment of department demands and individual skillsets and career aspirations. 
• Identify and communicate key responsibilities, priorities and practices to foster teamwork, a positive work environment and confidence in leadership to achieve business results.

5. Other Duties and Ad Hoc Projects

• Remain current on regulatory changes impacting the Accounting team.
• Remain current on Restaurant and Retail industry-specific technologies and emerging trends.
• Assist with strategic planning and implementation of department/company-wide initiatives.
• Prepare any ad hoc reports and analysis as requested.
• Build and maintain relationships with business leaders. Enhance cross-functional collaboration by fostering trust, commitment, accountability and results.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Skilled with Microsoft Office (Excel, word, Outlook, Access)
• Strong understanding of US GAAP and SOX required.
• Ability to work under pressure and within tight deadlines.

Related Experience

• Minimum 10-12 years of working experience in accounting roles (including minimum 3 years in “Big 4” public accounting firm).
• Mix of public accounting and industry experience at a publicly-traded company required.
• Proven experience leading large, multi-level teams required.
• Restaurant/Retail industry experience preferred.

Education Requirements

• BS/BA in Accounting or Finance required.
• CPA required.

About this role:

The audit director as an individual contributor provides strategic and operational leadership for their respective audit teams leading to the delivery of engagements in their risk coverage areas. Responsible to support RHIA to cultivate and manage relationships with senior collaborators in their business and/or functional areas leading to enhanced awareness of strategic priorities, key risks and deeper business knowledge. Use data to support IA processes, which may include working with internal and external partners to ensure greater insight and valued outcome.

Key Responsibilities:

· Ensure high quality audit and advisory engagements, in collaboration with the engagement clients, to foster simplification and enterprise approach.

· At least 7 + years of relevant business and/or functional experience. Experience in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company is a plus.

· Business, functional, and/or operational competence in related functions understanding company strategy and main risks

· Experience working in a matrix organization and building close relationships with 2nd line assurance/risk functions

As part of the third line of defense, you will be involved in independently assessing the firm’s overall control environment, effectiveness of the firm’s controls that mitigate current and emerging risks, monitoring the management’s implementation of control measures, and communicating the results to the firm’s local and global management. In doing so, you are supporting the provision of independent, objective, and timely assurance around the firm’s internal control structure, and supporting the Audit Committee, the Board of Directors, and Risk Committee in fulfilling their oversight responsibilities.

Responsibilities

You will play a vital role in the scoping and planning of the audits, deploy audit and analytical procedures and techniques to assess the design and operating effectiveness of the controls to mitigate the risks, and discuss the results with the firm’s local and global management. In addition, you will monitor and follow-up with management on the resolution of the open audit findings.

Basic Requirements

• Minimum of 12 years of experience as a technology auditor, executing audits on IT general controls, agile software development lifecycle (SDLC) controls.
• Strong foundation in IT general controls e.g change management, incident management, system resiliency, infrastructure security configurations etc.
• Able to understand and identify security vulnerabilities by manual inspection in multiple code across programming and configuration languages including but not limited to Python, Java, C++ and Terraform. System development experience in Agile/ DevOps is a plus.
• Strong foundation in SDLC methodologies, such as automated software security testing (e.g DAST, SAST, IaC etc), continuous integration and deployment of applications.
• Familiar or have audited software development and virtualization tools such as GitLab, Dockers, Kubernetes etc.
• Must be highly motivated with strong analytical and multitasking skill. Willing and able to learn new business and system processes quickly.
• Ability to work effectively across a large audit team, understanding the team's role in the overall strategy of the firm and able to coordinate with global counterparts.
• Understanding of financial regulatory requirements.

Technology audit skills, including understanding of (but not limited to):

• Relevant degree in Computer Science, Information Security, Engineering or equivalent.

Primary Job Function:

The Director in this position will utilize his/her technical accounting expertise, business understanding, and leadership to serve as a key resource to:

Determine the accounting for M&A deals and other transactions, including in-licenses, out-licenses, R&D arrangements, and collaborations,  Provide accounting guidance on other topics including revenue recognition, restructurings, establishment of reserves under various accounting rules, and accounting for various types of assets and liabilities, and Provide leadership and assist with the implementation of new accounting rules.

In each of these areas, the Director will interface with multiple functional areas within Abbott to identify the attributes of the arrangement, the applicable accounting rules, and their impact on Abbott.  The Director will also be responsible for documenting the accounting treatment and gaining the concurrence of Abbott’s auditors on complex accounting topics.

Core Job Responsibilities:

M&A Deals and Other Transactions

The position will analyze deal structures, assess alternative deal structures, and establish appropriate accounting of the deal.  When external valuation expertise is required, this position will serve as the primary interface with the valuation consultants, and will gain concurrence of the external auditors with the valuation results.  The position will establish and develop a valuation expertise, and subsequently counsel with divisions on valuation estimates.

Responsibilities include:

Review financial terms and business objectives of each proposed deal– in-licensing technology, out-licensing technology, business acquisitions, and other investments – and advise Division and Corporate Licensing and Acquisitions (L&A) and controllers as to the accounting result.  Document the accounting required for each deal in a memo to divisions, independent auditors, and DVP, Assistant Corporate Controller. Review contracts prior to execution from Corporate Controller’s perspective (including consistency with accounting resolution), and for other areas impacted and, as required, provide appropriate feedback to applicable Division, L&A and Legal. Develop and continuously improve a valuation capability within Abbott.  Serve as the primary liaison with external valuation experts on valuation engagements.  Work closely with the applicable business functions to gather and analyze data required by the valuation experts and to ensure that valuations meet Abbott’s financial reporting requirements.  Present valuation results to independent auditors and gain their concurrence on valuation results.

Provide Accounting Guidance on Other Areas of Abbott’s Operations

Responsibilities include:

Gain an understanding of the business operations that the position supports. Provide guidance to Divisions as needed on the accounting for other types of transactions.  Work closely with the Division to understand the arrangement, utilize his/her technical accounting expertise to conclude on the accounting and communicate such guidance. Provide guidance to Divisions as needed on the application of Abbott’s Corporate Finance policies. Assist with the updating of Abbott’s Corporate Finance policies as needed.

Implementation of New Accounting Rules

Monitor accounting rule-making bodies for proposed and adopted rules that may impact Abbott’s accounting.  Ensure impacts of proposed and adopted rules are communicated on a timely basis to Abbott areas affected Lead projects as needed to implement new accounting standards including developing processes needed to collect needed information on an ongoing basis. Work with Abbott’s external reporting group and its external auditors to gain alignment on the new disclosures to be included in Abbott’s financial statements.
