RESPONSIBILITIES

• The Research Assistant's responsibilities include, but are not limited to
  • Conducting literature review, writing research briefs, coordinating with external organizations;

The Role

Working as a member of the Coolamon Team, the Research Assistant will provide a professional level of research support to the ICARE Research Program (a NHMRC funded program aimed at providing coordinated and culturally responsive wraparound continuity of care to women and their infants, from pregnancy to 18 months post-birth).

Supporting the Coolamon Navigator, you will undertake recruitment, enrolling and consenting participants, data collection (including a 12-month post-birth study visit) and managing relationships with participating health services in the ICARE Program Perth metropolitan sites. Further key responsibilities for the role include:

• Working effectively in diverse settings (e.g. ACCHO , hospitals/health services), liaising with stakeholders, health care professionals, researchers, study investigators and colleagues,
• Undertaking research activities as directed, including:
  • Organising and following up potential research participants,
  • Undertaking enrolment and informed consent of participants into ICARE program,
  • Referring participants for the care package and supporting their participation,
  • Attending, and supporting consultation workshops,
  • Maintaining accurate data collection and data milestone completion.
• Participation in Aboriginal and ICARE team cultural activities,
• Adhering to the Institute’s Work, Health and Safety Management System and related regulations and guidelines.

What you’ll bring to this role

• Demonstrated experience of working effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples/communities and/or Aboriginal women and their families,

• Ability to successfully engage with Aboriginal people as research participants and conduct culturally safe interviews as part of the data collection of the project,

Job Description:

The Research Assistant will work in the Center for Translational Neuroscience (CTN) in the Carney Institute for Brain Science, directed by Eric Morrow MD/PhD and Judy Liu MD/PhD, under the direct supervision of Dr. Morrow. The position involves research with patients, including adults and children, and families with neurogenetic disorders involving autism, epilepsy and related neurologic disorders. The CTN studies molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurological and neuropsychiatric disease, including autism, intellectual disability, epilepsy and neurodegenerative disease. The goals of the CTN are to build knowledge of the pathophysiology of disease and also to develop new diagnostic tools and treatments for these brain conditions. This position involves patient-oriented research which is conducted in collaboration with colleagues in affiliated hospital settings, yet the work is well-integrated into a setting also involving laboratory-based genetic and neuroscience research. The position is responsible for day to day tasks associated with multiple studies of rare genetic disorders conducted by the CTN at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and affiliated hospitals E.P. Bradley Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital. Duties include interviewing participants and families to gather study data and obtain informed consent; maintenance of study records and tracking of study participants; data entry, reporting, and assistance with database management; and assistance with recruitment efforts. There is an opportunity to assist with data analysis and preparation of manuscripts.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of 06/30/2026 which may be extended based upon available funding.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Work done will be at the direction of the PI, and where relevant, the Industry Director and Centre Director.As the Programme is interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary by nature, you will be expected to convey yourdomain expertise and edify others (and vice versa) in as productive, constructive, and collaborative a manner as possible.

You may be asked to participate in the development of use cases and delivery of proof-of-concept prototypesfor government and industry partners in the areas of computable contracts and "rules as code". Experience inrequirements analysis and agile, iterative methodologies will be useful at this stage.The work of the team will be largely determined by these use cases and customers. We will work with multipleuse cases so that we can abstract across them and develop generalized, reusable infrastructure. We will workwith specific customers so we can build useful applications on top of that infrastructure.You will contribute to the design and development of open-source software written to serve those use cases.You will work as part of a team of research engineers, developers, and domain expertise and you will beexpected to actively participate in team meetings and text-based communications. Job Description:

The Fairbrother Laboratory is seeking a Research Assistant with experience in molecular and cell biology techniques. This candidate will assist with maintaining cell lines and reagents, perform transfections, PCR, western blotting, and protein and DNA extractions. In addition, the Research Assistant will be responsible for preparing equipment and supplies so that experiments in the laboratory can be carried out successfully. Candidate is expected to maintain order in the lab and assist with experiments in collaboration with computational biologists and other lab members.

The Fairbrother Laboratory uses a combination of computational biology and high throughput genomics techniques to identify functional elements in the genome. We seek to understand recognition events important in gene expression (i.e transcription and RNA splicing). Some specific projects include 1) understanding how particular arrangements of sequence elements are read by the splicing machinery, 2) identifying mutations/polymorphisms that disrupt splicing in the human population.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of one year from the date of hire which may be extended based upon available funding.

Job Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

• Required: Bachelor’s degree with 1-2 years of relevant laboratory experience.

• Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Relevant coursework and basic knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areas of Molecular, Cell Biology and Biochemistry. Candidate should be competent in basic molecular biology techniques, such as PCR, electrophoresis and western blotting, and in growing and maintaining mammalian cell cultures.

• Preferred: Specific experience in RNA/DNA purification and analysis, next-generation sequencing, biochemistry, or cellular imaging.
