The physical system installation design of commercial aircraft needs to consider a variety of intrinsic or external threat scenarios such as wheel and tire failure, bird strike, uncontained engine rotor failure (...). For selected aircraft functions it is required to demonstrate their availability following such an event in order to ensure continued safe flight and landing.
In order to optimize the physical system installation of an aircraft, it is necessary to understand the potential failure modes induced by the above mentioned threats towards those physical system components that contribute to aircraft safety. A level of complexity arises by the required multi physical interdependencies (e.g. transient shockwave loads acting on- installed electrical harnesses or pipes) that shall be analyzed by numerical simulations in time and space domain.
Multiphysics numerical simulation used for
Optimization of physical System Installation
Definition of innovative ways to demonstrate aircraft safety using latest simulation tools

Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.
You will support the global understanding of physical impacts originating from selected particular risk events by:
Research of scientific publications related to physical damage simulation of installed aircraft systems following selected particular risk events.
Identification of all input parameters to enable numerical multiphysics simulations
Consolidation of input parameters or their substitutive assumptions for.
Execution of selected multiphysics simulation use cases.
Thanks to this approach you will contribute to design optimization of system installation under consideration of cascaded aircraft safety objectives.
Enrolled full-time student (d/f/m) in the area of Multiphysics numerical simulation or an equivalent field of study.
You are motivated to work in aeronautics and multi physical numerical simulations.
You have an educational Engineering background [TU- preferably] in mechanical engineering.

The Arctic Marine Engineering and Ice Mechanics group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering studies how sea ice deforms and fractures in different scales, and how sea ice interacts with ships and offshore windfarms. Ice-covered seas are a harsh but sensitive environment that sets stringent requirements for safety and efficiency for all operations on them.
Understanding how ice fractures has fundamental importance in arctic marine technology and geophysics. The fracture processes of interest include fragmentation of sea ice against polar ships, ice sheets broken by ocean waves, large leads forming in sea ice, and formation of crevasses in glaciers. The importance of ice fracture research is enhanced by global warming, which is both increasing the fragmentation of ice and changing the mechanical properties of ice. Warm ice is different that cold ice. We are now looking for a
Postdoctoral Researcher position in the field of experimental ice mechanics
The Postdoctoral Researcher will to join our group and work on fracture of ice. Our international group conducts laboratory experiments to study the small-scale physical mechanisms and the parameters that impact fracture of ice. Our modern facilities include the 40m x 40m Aalto Ice and Wave Tank, a cold room with a smaller tank to make saline ice, and an environmental chamber with a wide temperature range. In ice fracture research we collaborate with University College London, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and other universities.
You are expected to join us in designing and conducting laboratory experiments on fracture of ice, and to contribute significantly in analysing the results and publishing articles in high-impact journals. We expect you to work as an active member of our group and to participate in group meetings and in planning of our future research. In addition, you may participate in supervising students and other teaching activities, but research will be the main task.
Your experience
As the work is experimental fracture research, you need to have a PhD in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, materials science, geophysics, or related field. A successful candidate will have a demonstrated proficiency in deformation and strength of solids. Experience in laboratory work, ice mechanics, or digital image correlation (DIC) will be considered as advantage. We are using DIC in our research. Good skills in English, writing and oral, are needed.
You may apply even if you are still in the process of writing your PhD thesis. In this case, indicate it clearly in your application.
What we offer
Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary of a postdoc is about 4000 €/month (gross), with a possible increase based on achievements. The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is currently 1612 hours. The employment contract includes occupational health care, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The employment relationship is full-time, fixed-term (period of two years) employment at Aalto University. If funding allows, the employment can be extended.
Join us!
To apply for the position, please submit your application electronically through our online recruitment system and provide the following documents in English:
The deadline for applications is the 31tst of March, 2024, at 23:59 Finnish time (UTC +2) and the position will be filled as soon as possible.

Doctoral Researcher positions in the field of ice mechanics and model-scale testing
Model-scale testing is the state-of-the-art method to define the ships’ performance in ice, and to study structure and ship interactions with ice. To deepen the understanding in these topics, Marine and Arctic Technology group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Aalto University operates and conduct research in Aalto Ice and Wave Tank – a unique testing facility that is part of significant research infrastructure of Aalto University.
Although the level ice performance of ships can be estimated satisfactorily with current scaling method and experience of the ice tanks, the method poses several drawbacks and challenges when the scope of testing deviates from these. We are now looking for two motivated doctoral researchers to work on 1) deformation and failure of ice by using advanced beam theories and experimental mechanics, and 2) scaling methods for model-scale testing in ice. The study is a part of a project that aims to improve model-scale testing methods in ice that aim to model accurately local ice-induced loads on a ship hull and structure.
Research topics
The research applies the state-of-the-art theories from the solid mechanics to describe the response and failure of ice. The description is utilized to describe the response of ice in laboratory conditions and to develop new scaling laws that are needed to interpret the observations between model-scale and full-scale. The doctoral students shall first deepen their understanding on beam theories to describe the response and failure of an ice beam. The knowledge is then applied to develop new scaling laws for model-scale testing and to validate the description through laboratory testing. The two doctoral theses are planned to be done in close collaboration where one focuses more on the theoretical part and one on the experimental part. Your work will be supported by Marine and Arctic Technology group which has vast experience on theoretical and experimental solid mechanics in full-scale, laboratory and model-scale testing. The project is done in collaboration with the experts from Texas A&M University (US) and Clarkson University (US). A researcher visit to these entities may be possible within this work.
Requirements
The research focuses on theoretical and experimental solid mechanics. Thus, the applicant should have good understanding of solid mechanics, mechanics of material or experimental mechanics. A suitable background may come from mechanical engineering, civil engineering, applied and experimental mechanics, or similar field. Experience on computational and experimental mechanics, product design, and proof of manufacturing skills are considered beneficial. By the time of starting, the applicant must fulfill the requirements for entitlement to do postgraduate studies at Aalto University: https://www.aalto.fi/en/study-options/aalto-doctoral-programme-in-engineering .
Employment
The position is at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and may include some work as a teaching assistant. Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. The starting salary of a doctoral student is about 2700 €/month (gross), and it increases as you progress in your research and studies. Following the standard practice in the School of Engineering, the contract will be made initially for two years, then extended to another two years after a successful mid-term progress review. The total duration of doctoral studies is four years. The employment relationships are full-time. The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours. The contract includes Aalto University occupational healthcare.
How to apply
The application material includes
All material should be submitted in Finnish or English. You may apply even if you are still in the process of writing your MSc thesis. In this case, indicate it clearly in your application.
Applications with attachments (in pdf-format) are to be submitted through the link below no later than March 15, 2024 at 23.59 Finnish time (UTC +2). The position will be fulfilled as soon as a suitable candidate is found.
Aalto University reserves the right for justified reasons to leave the position open, to extend the application period and reopen the application process.
