Our Opportunity
Are you new to the world of electronics and looking to develop some design experience? Are you keen to apply your theoretical knowledge to real problems and pick up some practical skills along the way? Thales OME designs a range of state-of-the-art solutions for some of the most technically advanced defence and security platforms in the world, and we are seeking talented interns who can apply their knowledge and skills in a summer placement.
This role is a 3-month summer placement lasting 12 weeks. It nominally starts in June and finishes in September but there is scope to adapt this to suit your course timetable. The placement is intended to give undergraduates in their 3rd or 4th years the opportunity to work with experienced engineers and apply concepts from their course to real-world applications. The role may cover any aspects of the product lifecycle, from concept studies, requirements, selection of technology, design and development, integration, validation and qualification.
This internship position is based in Reading. While there will be the opportunity to work from home, attendance on site will be necessary for lab work, such as circuit, assembly or system testing which is likely to form a significant part of the role. Being on site will also give you access to a significant pool of mentors, technical advisors and peers in order to establish your professional network.

Process Engineers work across technologies such as: Chemical Vapor Deposition, Atomic Layer Deposition, Plasma Reactive Ion Etch, Physical Vapor Deposition, Anneal and Implant.
This internship is targeting a student available to work 40 hours per week for 6 months.
Responsibilities
Participate in the creation of cutting-edge processes used to manufacture the most-advanced semiconductor chips, many of which are inside everyday electronic devices
Design, collect data, analyze and compile reports on complex process engineering experiments
Perform hardware characterization on a variety of systems
Measure film properties, organize data, and interpret data
Troubleshoot moderately complex problems, perform Root Cause Analysis and resolve moderately difficult process engineering issues
Generate internal documentation for products, presentations and technical reports
Requirements
Actively enrolled in a PhD program in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics or related field in Fall 2024
Must be in good academic standing, with a preferred a GPA above 3.0 on a 4.0 scale preferred
Ability to exercise judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of information
Explains difficult or sensitive information; works to build consensus
Flexible and adaptable mindset who thrives in a results-driven culture
Compensation
$48 - $52 per hour
The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on a number of factors including education level and will vary depending on confirmed job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

As the Field Service Engineer Intern you get to work with an astonishing team that plays a vital role in Carl Zeiss Research Microscopy Solutions. Showcase your skills and interest in electronics and mechanics. Experience with electronics, a mind for problem solving, or technical repair/troubleshooting are all sought-after attributes.
Success in this role requires dedication to learning and the rapid absorption of training material as a high percentage of your time will be spent in technical training courses and learning basic application principles to provide technical service. When not in classroom training, the FSE Intern will be engaged in on-the-job-training (OJT), working closely with, and assisting higher level FSEs in a customer environment. This is a customer-facing role and therefore strong interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively are required to be successful. This role requires extensive travel with occasional overnights.

Here’s what you’ll do:
Successful completion of technical training to acquire a rudimentary knowledge of Zeiss microscopy equipment.
Demonstrate, in the field, that the technical concepts learned in the classroom trainings and OJT can be applied to a high standard.
Engage as an active participant in all OJT; listening carefully, taking notes, asking questions, assisting when asked and absorbing the content fully.
Properly care for all ZEISS tools and assets as may be made available during the execution of assigned responsibilities.
Responsible for your personal safety when visiting labs and institutions by understanding the basics of lab behavior and an awareness of risks.
Travel to customer locations and complying with the ZEISS Corporate Travel Policy.
Deliver an end of program presentation to peers, mentors, and management.
Do you qualify?
Currently enrolled in a 4-year or graduate degree in technical/scientific discipline or equivalent experience.
Eagerness to learn, understand, and troubleshoot problems in software, electronics, optics and electron optics, high voltage, high vacuum, mechanical, and/or electro-mechanical systems.
Proven ability to work successfully as an individual contributor or as part of a team.
Nice to haves:
Familiarity with a microscope.
The hourly pay range for this position is $16.00 – $18.00 pending region.
