Clinical Research Fellow ST3 – Medical Oncology

Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Research Fellow in Cancer Drug Development. The aim of this position is to offer comprehensive specialist training in all aspects of running early phase oncology clinical trials including protocol development, regulatory procedures, associated translational research projects and presentation of research at meetings. Support and opportunities for pursuing higher research degrees are also available.

These full-time posts are available from August 2024 and will be for a period of up to 12 months in the first instance and there is potential opportunity to extend beyond 12 months. Applicants must demonstrate as part of their application, how they meet the essential requirements of the post. In particular, applicants should have a medical degree and GMC registration. Experience in oncology and clinical research are an advantage. Fluency in English and aptitude with writing and publishing manuscripts are essential.

The NIHR UCLH Clinical Research Facility (CRF) opened in February 2009 on the Ground Floor of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing of UCH, in the heart of Bloomsbury and is now located in a purpose built location on Tottenham Court Road.

It is a partnership between University College London (UCL) and University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust. The facility is funded principally by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR).

The CRF is also supported by funding from Cancer Research UK and the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC). It has a remit to progress high quality clinical research in any domain but with a specific focus on early-phase clinical trials and experimental medicine

The Senior Research Nurse will be lead the Surgery and Cancer Clinical Trial Team and will be responsible for identifying new clinical trials, the set up of trials, creating patient pathways, coordinating clinical trial activities and lead the relevant trial recruitments. The Senior Research Nurse will perform a range of clinical trial activities from obtaining legal and statutory approvals for clinical trials, setting up trials, as well as handling and managing trial recruitments and data. Perform a comprehensive, specialist assessment of patient eligibility for specific trial protocols. Plan, implement and evaluate care delivery for own case load, according to changing health care needs, and in conjunction with the clinical team. Attend multi-disciplinary meetings, and appropriate clinics, to screen and recruit new participants, and to act as a resource to the members of the multi-disciplinary team (MDT), Ensure the safe administration of treatments and the drugs that are given within the context of a clinical trial. This fellowship is a great training opportunity for those looking to augment their neurology experience or wishing to develop an interest in the clinical neurosciences (neurology) and / or stroke research, for one year and will be 50% clinical and 50% stroke research.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Time will be spent providing clinical support in the Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC) under the supervision of Dr Annamaria Kiss-Csenki, and other neurology consultants. The Wessex Neurological Centre is a tertiary centre of excellence providing neurological care in a variety of neurology subspecialties and serving a population catchment of 3.5 million. Exposure will be broad, across neurology, neurosurgery and stroke providing a good basis for early training. Activities will include looking after inpatients as part of consultant-led teams, and participating in audit, the weekly academic programme and continuing professional education. The post-holder will be expected to attend a weekly consultant-led teaching session. There will be opportunity to attend weekly neurology outpatients and see neurology outpatients under supervision for training purposes.

With respect to stroke research, there are opportunities to join the Hyperacute Stroke Research Centre (HSRC) which has an active research programme of acute clinical trials. The clinical fellow is encouraged to join the research nursing team in screening eligible patients for inclusion in these studies at HASU post take ward rounds. As well as completing Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training and joining the delegation log, there are opportunities to complete the NIHR Associate Principal Investigator (PI) scheme which our fellows have done previously, write and submit review articles and abstracts to national and international stroke meetings such as the UK Stroke Forum and European Stroke Organisation Conference (ESOC). This year a poster was successfully accepted at ESOC following a study about acute stroke imaging.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are looking for a GMC-registered medical doctor, with an interest in neurology. The ideal candidate would have successfully completed a Foundation Programme or equivalent and can apply for this post either prior to or during core medical or speciality training. You would be able to manage acute medical emergencies.

You will have an ability to prioritise tasks, work across different specialties and teams, recognize your own abilities and limitations, and communicate effectively with team members, patients, and their carers. Royal College of Physicians membership is desirable but not essential. Prior experience of research and/or Neurology would be an asset, but this post is also ideal for those seeking their first clinical research and/ or neurology experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed (non-training fellow doctors and dentists).

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. All licensed doctors must meet the GMC requirements for revalidation and there will be an annual appraisal to support this process.

Grades for Trust appointed (non-training) fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary detailed below plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Basic Salary - MT03 £43,923

Travelling expenses will not be paid for attending interview

Successful applicants will already have GMC registration or will be able to demonstrate they are eligible. We are recruiting an organised, hard-working individual to join our friendly and busy team to help in the delivery of a wide range of research projects and commercial trials in the areas of ecology, pests and disease in horticulture.

As a Research Assistant, your key duties include:

• Field work, such as preparing trial materials and marking out trials; applying treatments (spraying); monitoring crop husbandry; collating experimental data (plant, disease, pests); accurate record keeping; biocontrol, pollinator and wildflower identification.
• Laboratory work, such as laboratory maintenance; molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR); microscopy; and culturing microbial strains in vitro, invertebrate identification, maintaining plant cultures.
• Conduct drone- and ground-based phenotyping in both commercial and academic projects.
• Data entry, quality checks and administration.

Comprehensive training will be provided.

You will be joining NIAB’s Pest & Pathogen Ecology Department, which aims to understand the ecology of pests, pathogens, host plants and natural enemies at community, whole organism and molecular levels to develop more effective and sustainable management of horticultural crops.

The role at times can be physically demanding and includes working in all weather conditions outdoors and in polytunnels/glasshouses. In peak seasons, working pattern may vary from day to day.

Location

The role is based at East Malling, Kent, ME19 6BJ. East Malling is three miles from junction four of the M20, with plenty of free on-site parking. NIAB East Malling can easily be accessed by the London Victoria to Dover (via Ashford International) rail route via West Malling station. Alternatively, exit the train at the East Malling station and take the short walk onto site.

ABOUT YOU

Essential requirements
Ideally you have:

• BTEC/HND/A-Levels in science/horticulture or equivalent qualifications/experience
• Competency in Microsoft Office (ideally Word, Excel and SharePoint)
• Accurate observational and data recording skills with high attention to detail
• Practical experience of field and/or glasshouse work in a science or horticulture environment
• Full UK driving licence or access to independent means of travelling, enabling you to travel to grower sites. Transport can be provided.

Desirable requirements
Ideally you may also have:

• BSc in biology/biological sciences or equivalent qualifications/experience in horticulture
• Pesticide application certification (PA1 and PA6 or PA9)
• Practical experience of working in a laboratory, especially in molecular biology
• Experience in microbiology and/or crop protection
• Knowledge of plant pest and pathogen identification
• Experience of operating a drone and/or machine based phenotyping
