1. Overview

The Yang Chang Man Visiting Research Fellowship in Biodiversity and Leo Tan Visiting Research Fellowship in Biodiversity aim to attract postdoctoral researchers who have a passion to advance our knowledge and understanding of Southeast Asia’s rich fauna. The terrestrial, freshwater, and marine environment of Tropical Southeast Asia (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Myanmar, Philippines, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Timor-Leste) has an immense variety of animal life, much of it still poorly studied, and the LKCNHM is committed to better document this biodiversity.

This fellowship is designed to encourage and empower early career researchers who conduct specimen-based research to better understand the diversity of the region’s animal life and enhance taxonomic capacity. The fellowship will be administered by the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM), Faculty of Science, National University of Singapore. Up to two Fellowships, each for up to two years, may be offered each calendar year. Fellows will be based in the Museum, but may also work with researchers in other parts of NUS and/or institutes/organisations in Singapore.

The selection panel will use academic records, demonstrated research capability, strong track record, relevant publications, the quality of the submitted research/study proposal, relevance to the Museum, and appropriateness of the proposed fellowship activities to determine the extent to which candidates meet the eligibility requirements, and the positive factors for selection.

All proposals will need to be supported by a LKCNHM staff. Proposals developed jointly with NUS and/or Museum curators will be given preference.

2. Duties

1. Reporting directly to the LKCNHM Head or Deputy Head, Fellows will develop and implement a coherent specimen-based research programme that will advance knowledge and understanding one or more groups of tropical Southeast Asian terrestrial, freshwater or marine biodiversity.
2. Fellows will be expected to conduct research leading to the publication of high quality publications in established peer-reviewed outlets.
3. Fellows will be expected to work with researchers/affiliate researchers in LKCNHM, and may also collaborate with researchers in other institutes/agencies should the research study require.
4. Subject to the standard NUS terms of annual leave, Fellows will be expected to be in residence throughout the term of their appointment. In addition to annual leave, Fellows may apply for academic leave to undertake research and fieldwork overseas, subject to the approval of the LKCNHM Head.

• Degree & Experience: Applicants must have a PhD degree from a reputable institution, and preferably have formal work experience in biodiversity and/or specimen-based research after obtaining the PhD degree.

The Global Centre for Asian Women’s Health (GloW) aims to build a global research platform for transdisciplinary endeavours to address major health concerns over a woman's lifespan and across generations. Through its main hub in Singapore, the Centre will engage in multi-disciplinary research to promote women’s health, including a series of diet and lifestyle intervention studies.

Purpose of the role

The dietician will play a key role in dietary intervention studies by actively coordinating and managing diet and lifestyle intervention studies in GloW. Responsibilities include development, implementation and monitoring of meal plans, educating participants as needed, collecting dietary data, and performing administrative duties to ensure the studies’ success and compliance. The dietician will work closely with Principal Investigators of intervention studies, collaborate closely with the research team, food service team, and other relevant stakeholders, as well as undertake other ad-hoc responsibilities assigned by the Centre’s Director as needed.

Asia Research Institute

We are seeking an enthusiastic and capable full time Research Assistant/Associate who will be based at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore. This position is available on a full-time basis for a period of 9-12 months.

Job Description

For 50 per cent of the time, the successful candidate will assist the Principal Investigator, Professor Brenda Yeoh, in a funded research project entitled “Plastic Waste and Women’s Household Practices in Asia and Australia”. You will work with an interdisciplinary team of scholars based in Singapore and Australia to advance research and knowledge on the social, historical and digital practices that shape women’s household management of plastic waste. The project aims to identify and understand the dynamics associated with household consumption and disposal of plastics in Singapore, Australia and Japan, so as to complement the national and global aspirations to realise a circular economy.

For the other 50 per cent of the time, the successful candidate will assist Prof Brenda Yeoh with selected existing migration cluster projects in the institute (see https://ari.nus.edu.sg/clusters/asian-migration/projects/ for more information).

The successful candidate will be involved in desk research, data collection, project and website management, writing and editing reports, publications and materials, assisting with organisation of workshops and webinars, as well as providing administrative support.

Job Requirements

The candidate should possess the following:

• Candidates should have at least a good Bachelor’s (Honours) degree or equivalent in the Social Sciences/Humanities, and demonstrated research experience in a relevant area of the humanities and social sciences. An interest and knowledge in plastic waste, climate change or migration will be a bonus. A relevant Masters’ degree is required for the Research Associate position.
• Good project management, data administration skills and an aptitude for working in an interdisciplinary team environment;
• Research experience in Asia, including fieldwork experience is desirable;
• Strong library research skills and experience in using (or willingness to learn) Qualitative Data Analysis software (NVivo);
• Excellent command of spoken and written English, and the ability to write for a variety of audiences;
• Strong ability to perform editing work on manuscripts;
• Organizational skills for workshops and webinars;
• Ability to create and maintain a project website and social media.

Job Description

The Mechanobiology Institute, National University of Singapore is a multi-disciplinary institute committed to developing new paradigms for biomedical research by focusing on the quantitative analysis of dynamic functional processes. Through quantitative biophysical approaches, we address major problems in biomedical sciences including pathogenesis (from bacterial to cancer), tissue regeneration and function.

We are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Fellow (Research Fellow) to join Asst. Prof. Andrew Holle’s Confinement Mechanobiology group (established in January 2021).

The Confinement Mechanobiology group's broad objective is to use mechanobiology principles and recent observations on the nature of small, fluid-filled ‘cellular highways’ in the interstitial extracellular matrix (ECM) to identify, engineer, and leverage the role of confinement in cell biology. It is interested in leveraging new molecular biology tools, including RNA-Seq, CRISPR screens, ChIP-seq, and engineered tensions sensor probes to better understand the mechanical and genetic responses of the nucleus to self-induced cellular confinement, and then extend these findings to the cytoskeleton, focal adhesions, and extracellular matrix. The MBI and NUS provide state-of-the-art facilities dedicated to microfluidics, high-resolution imaging, and cell culture that will support the fellow in training, setup, and execution of the project, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with talented and motivated research staff, interdisciplinary PIs, and clinician scientists. Applicants with unique proposals relating to confinement mechanobiology within the scope of the lab, especially in the areas of microfluidics, cellular engineering, or biomaterials development are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Candidates should possess the following:

• a PhD in bioengineering, biology, biomedical sciences, or similar fields
• a strong background in mechanobiology, molecular biology techniques, microscopy, and image analysis
• Prior knowledge of microfluidics would be advantageous, though not a prerequisite
• Excellent communication skills and engage in collaborative research in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
