We are looking to appoint a whole time or part time Locum Consultant Geriatrician for our Acute Geriatric service in East Kent Hospitals. We would welcome applications from candidates across the full spectrum of experience, from those who have recently completed training to those who have well established careers. We currently provide an inpatient service on two acute hospital sites, at Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital (QEQM) in Margate, Kent and The William Harvey Hospital (WHH) in Ashford, Kent. However, this post is for the QEQM.



This fixed term contract will only be agreed for the maximum term of 24 months with purpose of enabling you to complete your portfolio pathway (formerly CESR) application. During this period, we expect therefore that you positively and actively engage in this process and provide periodical evidence to confirm activity against this requirement cumulating into submitting your application in advance of the end of this contract. If you do not fully complete the pathway by the end of the contract or provide evidence when requested that you are taking steps to complete the pathway application, then your employment contract will be terminated.

The Job Plan will be flexible around the needs of the individual whilst meeting the needs of the service. The job plan may be negotiated following a period of induction and thereafter will be reviewed on annual basis within the job planning cycle. The 10 PAs contract will include both direct clinical care (DCC) and supporting activity (SPA). Extra PAs may be available to applicants for personal or professional reasons to work more than 40 hours per week.

We will work with you to shape the ideal job plan upon successful appointment, and review it with you after three months and then annually – so you can keep the perfect fit.

We will also provide the essential resources to support you in your duties, including administrative support.

The Consultant will have a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and to undertake the administrative duties associated with their care. They will be expected to co-operate with the Clinical Director and Care Group Management on organisational and budget issues.


The Post holder will work closely alongside other Geriatricians in post to create a pleasant working environment with teamwork at the heart of what you do.


The on-call commitment and acute hospital sessional commitment to medicine and rehabilitation will be organised with the Consultant’s colleagues to ensure both delivery of this goal and continuity of responsibility for inpatient care. The on-call commitment will include 1:8 week day cover and a 1:10 weekend cover.


In addition to general medical and rehabilitation duties there are flexible commitments, including administration, management, committee work, pastoral visits, relative interviews etc. Appropriate acute skills are required in view of the acute admissions under the age-related policy.

The Neonatal intensive care unit at the William Harvey is one of 4 level 3 units within the South East Coast Operational Delivery Network (SEC ODN). There are 25 cots in total (7 NICU, 4 HDU and 14 SCBU cots) and a newly developed neonatal outreach service to help facilitate earlier hospital discharge support for families. Referrals for the neonatal care are from within the Trust, within the network and sometimes out the network. The Neonatal Unit provides full medical intensive care services and including therapeutic hypothermia, nitric oxide and management of extremely preterm infants. Neonatal surgical and cardiac patients are transferred to the neonatal unit at The Evelina Children’s Hospital.

This is a 10 PA post and the post holder will share the clinical duties with the other neonatal consultants. A consultant of the week system in operation with 1-week block of service. The other consultant of the week has no duties off site. It is anticipated that about 8.5 weeks/year will be clinical as consultant of the week for the intensive care nursery and a similar number covering HDU/SC/TC and the post-natal ward. Additional PA’s may be available depending on the needs of the service.

The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford is a district general
hospital, a Level 2 Trauma Centre, and the Kent and Medway
centre for pPCI and major head and neck surgery. It provides east
Kent’s NICU, a specialist cardiology unit undertaking angiography
and angioplasty, a state-of-the-art pathology analytical robotics
laboratory and a robotic pharmacy facility. It has a well-equipped
postgraduate teaching centre and staff accommodation.
