Senior Science Technician
Do you enjoy working with young people and adults and have a passion and enthusiasm for science?
Rougemont School are seeking to recruit a self-motivated and proactive individual to join our Science Team. You should be methodical and organised and have the ability to communicate well with both pupils and staff. You will support the Science department by preparing, storing and maintaining materials, equipment and records; assisting with Chemistry, Physics and Biology lessons and examinations and ensuring that the laboratories are safe and clean environments.
The role will involve:
• Preparing the required materials and equipment for lessons, demonstrations, practical examinations, following CLEAPPS guidance.
• Maintaining an adequate stock of chemicals and equipment.
• Engendering safe working practices in the Science area.
• Ensuring that the laboratories, prep rooms and storage areas are safe and clean environments
We are seeking applications from individuals who have effective communication and interpersonal skills; are organised, flexible, calm and have meticulous attention to detail. Experience of working in a laboratory and following / implementing health and safety guidelines in a scientific environment are essential.
This is a term time role, working 37.5 hours per week (between the hours of 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday). In return you will be offered a salary of between £25,000 - £26,600 per annum.

The Senior R&D Technician provides technical support to Lead Scientists and Technologist Leaders in the preparation and execution of experimental activities and studies. Acts as primary focal point for technical support of a process, program, product, or application within the work group and occasionally for internal/external clients and customers. Provides technical support for product development, application development, technical service, and/or product or process research.

This role required that you gain proficiency through on-the-job training and experience. You need either deep skills in this discipline or knowledge of a range of processes, procedures, and systems. You also need a broad understanding of the job and know how to apply knowledge and skills to complete assigned tasks. You should understand how your team works with others to accomplish objectives and be able to exchange detailed, complicated information with other team members.

It is your responsibility to evaluate analytical or scientific problems in unusual situations and select solutions based on established procedures. You will serve as an informal resource on operational, administrative, data organization, or coordination tasks for less experienced team members with no direct supervisory responsibilities. Your performance will impact the quality, timeliness, and effectiveness of your own work and your team’s work. You should be able to modify work practices and processes to achieve results and/or improve efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Works as part of a team in a laboratory supporting chemists and engineers in developing, screening and commercializing new products and process.
• Manages and then safely executes laboratory work requests, maintaining and running relevant laboratory apparatus and testing equipment and documenting data.
• Develops experimental plans for review/approval by Lead Scientist or Technology Leader, and executes approved plans by performing routine and non-standard tasks or procedures of higher complexity.
• Achieves project goals using technical, role-specific skills and experience, and introduces new procedures for new instrument methods, equipment changes, or new equipment.
• Develops a specific expertise within the department and laboratory work group in specific procedures, equipment, or instruments.
• Acts responsible for calibration, safe operation and routine maintenance of simple and complex instruments, machinery, and system components, including production equipment.
• Updates personal knowledge for proper use of equipment via manuals and job aids, logs maintenance activities and calibration results as required.
• Communicates scientific observations to project team or principle investigator, and organizes and prepares data tables and charts for inclusion in supported studies.

Qualifications

• A minimum of an Associates degree in a engineering/chemistry related discipline and 3 years of relevant work experience or high school diploma and 5 years of relevant work experience
• Feels comfortable to work with and analyze data/numbers

Job Responsibilities
- Managing the allocation of work between the technician team, ensuring an appropriate standard of work is provided and arranging training, appraisal and performance management
- Assisting and advising on the preparation and layout in the classrooms for practical exercises, undertaking demonstrations when required
- The safety, repair and general maintenance of all resources, equipment and tools, advising on any maintenance or inspection required beyond your competence
- The welfare and care of the plants and animals in the science area and the security of the equipment
- General administrative duties, including photocopying and filing
- Stock keeping, using the computerised stocktake database to include chemicals, equipment, textbooks, stationery, etc.
- Raising orders for stock and monitoring budget expenditure
- Making up special equipment or modifying from existing equipment as necessary
- Working in close association with other technical staff and admin support staff as required and keeping areas in neat, clean, tidy and safe condition
- Advising students and staff on the safe and proper use of tools and equipment and on the correct and safe way to carry out learning activities
- Paying due regard to Health and Safety in the school, including the update of the Science Health & Safety Policy

The current teaching staff complement is 88 FTE with 20 FTE staff other than teachers, including a team of Pupil Support Assistants, who support the integration of pupils. There is an integrated Additional Support for Learning Team combining the former Guidance and Support for Learning teams. In line with the Authority’s integration policies, the school caters for a wide variety of physical, sensory and learning needs. This has been highly successful and forms a key element of our social inclusion strategy.

The school was refurbished in 2004 and enjoys a high standard of accommodation, although social areas are limited and teaching space has to be rigorously timetabled. The facilities are used extensively outside of normal school hours by the school, the RHS Club and the community; the school is designated a Community Sports Hub and the PE facilities were refurbished in 2015 to support this. There is an excellent extra-curricular programme, with partner clubs and staff offering a range of opportunities in which young people can participate. ICT facilities are very good and S3-6 pupils all have access to a 1:1 iPad device to support their learning at home and in school.

The school has positive links with parents, local businesses and the local community. The Parent Council and School Fundraising Group play an important role in the life and work of the school. Meetings are well attended and discussions are always lively and informative. The school is also supported by an active Former Pupils’ Club.
