Digital Collections Specialist
Do you have a curiosity for discovering how technologies work? Do you want to establish digital collecting activities across the Science Museum Group?
About Us
As the world's leading group of science museums, the Science Museum Group (SMG) has an unparalleled collection spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics, media, and medicine, with extensive digital and audiovisual content across our world-class collections and corporate records.
We are now recruiting for a Digital Collections Specialist based at any of the SMG sites in London, Manchester, York, Bradford or Wroughton with hybrid working available too. This is a full-time, permanent role, working 35 hours per week.
About the role
In this exciting new role as Digital Collections Specialist, you will devise and lead good practice acquisition and archiving of SMG's digital collections and digital corporate records, to ensure their long-term sustainability.
As Digital Collections Specialist you will be responsible for leading the surveying of SMG's digital and audiovisual collections. In establishing digital collecting activities, your role will support Curators and Archivists acquiring born-digital and hybrid digital content, as well as facilitating SMG colleagues' digital skills development (relevant to our digital collections and digital corporate records).
Working closely with the Digital Preservation Manager, you will contribute to the wider Digital Preservation Programme through the Digital Collecting Project. You will be instrumental in driving the digital collecting programme of activity outlined in SMG's Collection Development Policy 2021 and Digital Strategy 2022-2024: Reach and Impact, so that the Group's rich and diverse collection of digital and audiovisual content is acquired, preserved, and made available for future generations.
About you
Joining us you have relevant skills and experience gained in a collections, asset management, records management, or technical role within a digital environment. You will be able to use your communication skills to work collaboratively with colleagues and external stakeholders.
Crucially, you will have experience in a digital, computing, and/or technical context, with knowledge of a variety of digital file formats. You will also have a curiosity for discovering how technologies work and the ability to analyse technical challenges and deliver appropriate solutions.
