Job Summary
The Financial Representative is responsible for all fiscal aspects of admission and observation accounts and preparing accounts for billing to ensure maximum payment on a timely basis. Ensures protection of hospital's financial position.
Essential Functions
- Is responsible for daily review of inpatient or observation accounts for accuracy and completeness of information and documentation.
- Communications with departments that need to know when changes are made to patient information, such as insurance benefits or priority.
- Uses various sources to obtain and verify insurance benefits and eligibility. Potentially, family/employer interviews and/or use of electronic information to check benefits and eligibility.
- Meets precertification requirements of insurance companies.
- Keeps current with all internal and external policy and procedures that may affect reimbursement
- Notifies patients who receive elective services about balances due. Assists all telephone and walk-in patients with billing concerns.
- Monitors accounts with a long length of stay or large self-pay liabilities.
- Refers low-income patients seeking to apply for financial assistance.
- Documents all necessary information in the hospital computer system.
- Serves as a resource to patient registration staff in resolving problems. Covers for cashier during lunches and breaks.
- Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
- Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
- Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
- Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team and facilitates the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
Qualifications
- Required High School Diploma, preferred Associate's Degree
- 3 years of relevant experience Hospital business office experience or three to five years of registration experience required
