The Legal Manager supports the Senior Manager, Legal to manage the University legal projects, manage contracts, oversee knowledge management function and custody of the University’s corporate documents and seal, and provide legal advisory services as required to ensure the compliance with external legislative requirements, to manage the policy & compliance and to support the effective operation of the university's primary activities and management processes.

Legal & Group Secretariat (L&GS) is responsible for delivering an integrated and consistent approach to the Group’s legal advice and corporate governance. L&GS partners with business units to assist them in attaining their strategic goals and sustaining a competitive advantage by ensuring legal risks to the Group are appropriately recognised and managed. To do this L&GS aligns with our business partners, identifying and assisting them in managing legal risks in a clear manner optimising the use of external counsel (where required).
The Technology Legal team, which is part of L&GS, provides high value strategic advice to our internal clients to support and enhance the Group’s competitive advantage in technology, business success and market value. To support delivery of this outcome, Technology Legal in collaboration with Group Procurement has implemented an Express Contracting Channel (ECC), led by a Senior Legal Counsel from Technology Legal, with support from a Legal Counsel to provide dedicated legal support for a higher volume of lower risk technology procurement projects that can be accelerated safely.
As Legal Counsel within ECC, you will report to the Senior Legal Counsel leading the ECC. This is your chance to be part of a team that embraces velocity and volume, and highly values its stakeholder relationships, both internally and externally.
Do work that matters
Advise on the engagement of technology vendors and implementation of technology in the ECC where the focus is on accelerating the process to enable suppliers to provide the Group with products and services sooner.
Demonstrate strong technical legal skills, including interpretation of legislation, drafting and negotiation of technology agreements, including being confident to guide stakeholders to alternate and negotiated legal positions that provide appropriate coverage.
Communicate clearly by providing accurate, timely, commercial and succinct advice in plain English.
Maintain a detailed understanding of, and expertise in, the Group’s practices, procedures and policies, particularly in Tech Legal, Cyber Security and Group Privacy Office, and an ability to work with those teams to safely navigate to contracts proportionate with the risks.
Being actively engaged, excelling in client service, and being determined to simplify processes within L&GS and more broadly where applicable.

We’re interested in hearing from people who have
Minimum two or more PQE years of relevant legal experience.
Excellent tertiary qualifications in law and a current NSW (or equivalent) practising certificate.
Relevant TMT experience negotiating contracts for the purchase of goods and services. Ideally, this experience includes the negotiation of SaaS agreements, managed services agreements, software licensing agreements and similar projects at a top or mid-tier law firm in Australia or in-house, preferably at a financial services institution after being trained in a law firm. Experience on privacy, data, cyber security and artificial intelligence in a financial service context is preferred.
Strong technical legal skills, including interpretation and application of privacy and data protection laws and regulations.
Highly effective oral and written communication skills including the ability to provide clear, succinct plain English legal advice.
Deep curiosity about emerging legal risks and issues in technology, data protection and cyber security.
Excellent interpersonal and negotiation skills.

Do work that matters
Advise key clients on:
Engagement of technology vendors and implementation of technology in complex IT, as well as regulatory issues involving IT;
The impact of data protection and privacy laws on strategic initiatives within the Group;
Legal, governance and regulatory issues in relation to artificial intelligence; and
Legal and compliance issues in relation to cyber security in a financial services context.
Provide corporate support in relation to the Group’s M&A transactions, partnerships and joint ventures, including support for data segregation and data commercialisation.
