In you're role as the applied statistician or data scientist you will join the Quantitative Risk within the Analytics and Decision Sciences Program of CSIRO Data61.
This Group is a leader in using robust, data-driven analytics to improve risk-based decision making under uncertainty, across a range of sectors ranging from environment and ecology, agriculture, biosecurity, climate resilience and critical infrastructure.
In this particular role you would aim to deliver novel statistical and data science research and impact related to the intelligent acquisition of data, integration frameworks for diverse data, and robust inference on key attributes of complex systems.
This work will be deeply connected to high profile, real-world applications such as: agriculture (e.g. assessing the pressure and risk to the supply chain from pests), environmental biosecurity (e.g. the spatial distribution of introduced animals and weeds), monitoring and modelling the abundance of crown of thorns starfish in the Great Barrier Reef, and estimating the status, trend and distribution of the Koala population as part of National Koala Monitoring Program.
Your duties will include:
- Under limited direction, assist in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carry out quantitative research analytics, requiring originality, creativity and innovation.
- Develop novel methodological approaches to data analytics by adapting and/or generating original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research.
- Implement these methodologies when addressing real-world problems, and publish results in the scientific literature, with a focus on both statistical and domain journals and conferences.
- Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary, often regionally dispersed research team, and business unit.
- Liaise with clients to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for client satisfaction.
- Science communication – interpret and present the research findings to industry, policy makers and scientists.

Salary: AU$105,806 - AU$114,500 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
- A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as statistical science, data analytics, machine learning, or mathematics.
- Demonstrated ability to make probabilistic inferences from data using a range of analytical techniques, including Bayesian approaches, particularly for complex processes that change over space and/or time.
- A track record of innovation and the novel development of statistical and analytical approaches, and their application to real world problems.
- Strong programming skills (e.g. R, Python or equivalent) to undertake customized statistical data analyses.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, needed to make research accessible to diverse audiences in constrained time frames. This includes a demonstrated ability to publish impactful scientific papers and effectively share research outcomes to clients, collaborators, and technical/community stakeholders.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary, potentially physically dispersed research team to deliver project and research outcomes, and with external partners and stakeholders to understand the problem and co-develop solutions.
