Academic duties The Welsh Centre for Emergency Medicine Research offers exposure to a full range of research activities. The Centre undertakes quite detailed laboratory based work in the form of preclinical modelling, and a large range of both clinical and epidemiological studies. Although the candidate will be exposed to a wide range of research activities, the candidate will be encouraged to focus on an area or study of their choice. This role will give the candidate the opportunity to gain a wider understanding of research methodology and trial design (i.e. statistical design, hypothesis generating concepts). There is also the opportunity for those who are interested to undertake training in laboratory based research in clinically related studies (i.e. preclinical modelling of disease and treatment evaluation). Clinical duties This job will provide the candidate with the opportunity to consolidate pre-existing Emergency Medicine experience and develop a clinical portfolio for future applications in Emergency Medicine or their chosen specialty. The job will involve the prompt assessment and treatment of undifferentiated patients in all areas within the emergency department. The successful candidates will initially join the full shift 20 slot junior rota working 50% of a clinical slot with the remaining 50% time dedicated to research activities. Current full slot averages approximately 45 hours per week with 2:4 weekends. Suitable candidates can progress within the department to middle grade rota if desired. There is a weekly teaching programme the candidate will attend which will explore topics around the RCEM portfolio. There will also be the opportunity to access regional and national educational events as appropriate for the individuals learning needs. You will be allocated a dedicated educational and academic supervisor to help plan for your future development. We are looking for a motivated Post-Doctoral Research Fellow to work with Amrit Mudher and Phil Williamson developing methods to investigate how the cellular milieu influences the folding, structure and function of large molecular complexes including amyloid fibre structure and integral membrane proteins. This Leverhulme Trust funded project will combine the powerful genetic tractability of Drosophila melanogaster with the molecular resolving power of modern sensitive solid-state NMR experiments to report on the structure, dynamics, and function of these assemblies in-vivo.

The project will build on preliminary studies that have demonstrated that modern proton detected ultra-high field solid-state NMR methods can provide the necessary resolution and sensitivity to study the structure and dynamics of large molecular complexes in-situ in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. The project seeks to establish workflow that will enable the induced expression and labelling of macromolecular complexes and a range of NMR methodologies that permit the characterization of their structure and dynamics as well as interactions with other cellular components.

Ideally applicants should possess a PhD in biochemistry (or related descipline) and ideally experience in either Drosophila research and/or solid-state NMR. The position will be based in the School of Biolgical Sciences, which provides state of the art facilities for invertebrate research and solid-state NMR research (both locally and through the UK National Research Facility). The Opportunity:

A Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) position is available starting from ca. July 1st 2024 for 12 months.

The PDRA will be supervised by Dr Jennifer Garden and is based in the School of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. This post is full-time (35 hours per week), and is funded through the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship programme. This project is part of a larger endeavour studying the synthesis and application of novel block copolymers, and focuses on the preparation and characterisation of new polymer materials.

This project requires a highly motivated candidate, with a PhD in polymer chemistry. The ideal candidate will have expertise in ring-opening and/or olefin polymerisation as well as some experience in characterising the mechanical, thermal and/or rheological properties of polymer materials. The successful applicant will be responsible for the leadership and development of a small team of support staff facilitating home grown research in LUHFT.

We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and motivated individuals to take up this recently developed Clinical Fellow post. The post will rotate on a 6-monthly basis between clinical duties within the critical care unit and full-time educational activity. The clinical duties within critical care will involving working on a full shift pattern, supporting the non-anaesthetic resident rota at Southport Hospital. The educational role will involve supporting the delivery of the medical education programmes delivered at Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals, primarily but not exclusively for undergraduate medical learners.

The Critical Care Unit based on the Southport Hospital site, provides Level 2 and 3 care for a general ICU population, as well as a Postoperative Critical Care Unit (POCCU). The unit is currently constituted as 18 critical care bed-spaces (funded to 11) which can be used flexibly. The department is actively engaged with the management of deterioration within the hospital and has critical care outreach over 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.



This post will rotate on a 6-monthly full-time basis between the clinical education fellow role and clinical fellow in critical care role.

The clinical education fellow is a recently created post and the post holder will support the department of medical medication at S&O in the delivery of the trust simulation and clinical skills programmes, primarily but not exclusively, for medical undergraduate learners on placement in the trust.

The duties within this educational role will be primarily undertaken during daytime hours, Monday to Friday. It will not routinely include evening and/or weekend duties.

All principal clinical duties are usually undertaken under the direct, local and distant supervision of a Consultant in Critical Care and/or Consultant Anaesthetist at Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals. The Critical Care Unit at Southport and Formby District General Hospital consists of 5-funded level 3 and 6 level 2 beds. The resident medical cover is provided by both anaesthetic and non-anaesthetic personnel, including medical trainees, Advanced Critical Care Practitioners (ACCPs) and Clinical Fellows.

The duties within the clinical role has daytime, evening and weekend resident duties, supporting the non-anaesthetic resident rota on the critical care unit at S&O.

The Secretary of State has approved the partnership between St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospitals and Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.
