Your Role as a Functional Skills Tutor

Are you passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of individuals within the criminal justice system? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our team as a Functional Skills Tutor at HMP Peterborough.

As a Functional Skills Tutor at HMP Peterborough, you will plan, develop, implement, and evaluate activities and courses to help prisoners achieve their functional skills qualification in English. You will be expected to monitor the attendance, achievement, and progression of learning, whilst challenging any negative behaviours and increasing prisoners’ self-esteem through a self-directed learning/teaching style. Some of our prisoners come to us with undiagnosed learning difficulties and neurodivergence and often have lost their confidence in education - we need someone who will ensure that every prisoner when its time leaves empowered with the ability and desire to learn more.

Working in a prison, you will enjoy year-round education without the constraints of term-based schedules, providing the flexibility to take leave throughout the year. With significantly smaller class sizes, typically ranging from 6 to 12 students, our tutors can adopt a learner-centric approach, customising teaching methods to cater to individual needs. Additionally, the requirement for learner files to remain on-site and the inclusion of daily administrative time means no home marking, allowing our tutors to focus their energy on in-class instruction and student support.

This is both a challenging and rewarding role, where you directly impact the future of our prisoners, by equipping them with the tools they need to incorporate stability in their lives upon release.

Key Responsibilities


- Checking outcomes from initial and diagnostic assessments.
- Reviewing outcomes from Additional Learning Needs screener.
- Setting up suitable cohorts of learners in both subject areas.
- Planning delivery.
- Creating and updating supportive resources.
- Monitoring progress and maintaining records on Smart Assessor.
- Liaising with Programme Leads to keep them on top of learner progress.
- Amending delivery or resources as required to meet learning needs.
- Highlighting any issues as they arise and setting suitable strategies to overcome them.
- Providing support to other departments as needed.

What we’re looking for

The suitable candidate must have a teaching qualification and have experience in delivering maths and English Functional Skills to level 2. An awareness of learning support methods and strategies would be helpful. An understanding of the demands of the role from a quality assurance and inspectorate perspective would be a bonus.

Specialist Study Skills Tutor (2 full-time or 3 part-time vacant positions equivalent to 2 FTE,)

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Access and Learning Strategies team within the Library’s Learning Services at UWE Bristol, one of the largest universities in the South West and one of the largest employers in the Bristol region.

Our team works collaboratively, including regular and relevant continuing professional development (CPD) and opportunities for peer reflective practice.

About the vacancy:
Supporting students at undergraduate, postgraduate level and degree apprentices, you will deliver high quality one-to-one specialist study skills support, particularly for neurodivergent students with specific learning differences (SpLD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and those on the autism spectrum. You will help students to develop appropriate learning strategies, techniques and capabilities to meet their individual needs.

As a member of the Library’s Learning Services, you will be part of a strong and collaborative community of professional specialists and librarians, and central to the design and delivery of innovative, high quality student support.



You will need to demonstrate commitment to inclusive practice and consideration of diverse audiences. About you:

You will be a qualified Specialist Study Skills Tutor holding full or associate professional membership of one of the four recognised professional bodies – ADSHE, PATOSS, BDA or Dyslexia Guild with experience in teaching/training and developing students' academic literacy and study skills. You will have general education to degree level or equivalent as well as a postgraduate certificate in teaching/supporting students with additional learning needs, i.e. SpLD, or equivalent. You will be able to evidence engagement with regular and relevant CPD.

Ideally, we are seeking one 0.8 FTE candidate and two 0.6 FTE candidates. However, as we have the equivalent of 2 FTE vacancy to fill, we would be happy to consider applications from those looking for full-time or part-time work. Full-time equates to 37 hours per week.
