About AIMS
The Australian Institute of Marine Science is Australia’s tropical marine research agency.
We are a trusted advisor, a partner and employer of choice, and we value integrity, innovation, collaboration and respect. AIMS’ research of Australia’s tropical marine ecosystems guides their effective environmental management and contributes to our understanding of similar ecosystems around the world.
Our research seeks to deliver practical benefit to all Australians and supports the sustainable use of our tropical marine estate. Governments, reef managers, industry and the wider community look to our high-quality, long-term research for informed decisions about our iconic Great Barrier Reef, North-West Shelf, and Arafura and Timor Seas. AIMS expert teams at our locations in Townsville, Darwin and Perth have access to world-class infrastructure, unique datasets, cutting-edge laboratories, and a fleet of modern research vessels.
About these exciting opportunities
Reef restoration and coral adaptation science is a growing area of research at AIMS, and as a result we have three newly created positions for experienced research scientists to join our Recovery Adaptation and Restoration Program. As a Research Scientist/ Senior Research Scientist, you will provide leadership, strategic direction, and scientific vision in developing and undertaking restoration and coral adaptation research and building a research program relevant to the team you join:
Research/Senior Research Scientist – Coral Early-life Ecology will join our Coral Reproduction and Aquaculture team, who are focused on understanding the reproductive biology of corals and developing methods for aquaculture production for restoration and adaptation. You will build a research program in the field of coral reproductive and early-life history biology and ecology and provide leadership, scientific vision to develop and deliver major projects in this field.
Research/Senior Research Scientist – Applied Ecological Geneticists will join our Coral Reef Adaptation team, who are focused on understanding natural rates of acclimatisation and adaptation and potential enhancements for restoration. You will build a research program in the field of assisted evolution (including genomics, physiology, microbiology, and ecology) and lead strategic research to understand the genetic basis of coral holobiont adaptation to climate change and enhance coral thermal tolerance via one or several bioengineering methods as the science base for genetic management, restoration and adaptation of corals and other organisms.
Research/Senior Research Scientist – Coral Phenomics and Symbiosis will join our Technology Advanced Analysis and Synthesis team, who are focused on establishing diagnostic tools to test and monitor corals to support rapid, real-time measurement of coral health and fitness which is at the heart of enhance corals for restoration and adaptation. You will build a research program in the field of coral phenomics and symbiosis and lead strategic research to understand the physiological health, fitness and adaptive potential of natural and enhanced coral populations and developing new tools to predict and measure coral’s ability to respond to environmental changes.
You will use your experience to supervise technical staff, research students and post-doctoral fellows, as well as engage closely with stakeholders and partners of AIMS and to identify opportunities for collaborative research within AIMS and among research partners, Traditional Owners, Grant bodies and industry. As a Senior Research Scientist, you will have the opportunity to also taken on a Research Team Leader position.
