We are seeking an experienced, self-driven and committed Principal/Senior Research Officer to conduct research and surveillance of arboviruses and other pathogenic viruses at the Environmental Health Institute.

The successful candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary environment, where his/her research is translated into evidence-based public health programmes and policies. The candidate will lead/ conduct studies that will contribute to the risk assessment of arboviruses and/or environmentally transmitted viruses. These studies may include virus culture and characterization, seroepidemiological studies using various immunoassays, among others. He/she will be involved in experimental design, research execution, data analysis and reporting, and will be expected to publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Job Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree with 5 years relevant experience; Masters or PhD degree in Virology, Immunology, Cell Biology or related disciplines.
• Preferably at least three years of working experience and proficiency in core areas relevant to virology, such as virus isolation, mammalian cell culture, immunology and serology.
• Willing and physically fit to work in a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3) environment. Prior working experience in BSL3 facility is preferred.
• Able to lead, design and conduct research projects independently.
• Able to multi-task and with good organisational skills.
• Able to work well in a team, as well as independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Willing to work after office hours and/or weekends when necessary.

We seek an experienced and highly motivated researcher to further expand and strengthen the vector-borne disease research programme at the Environmental Health Institute (EHI), National Environment Agency (NEA). The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of researchers focusing on vector-pathogen interactions, vector biology, arbovirology, molecular biology and novel vector control tools. In addition, you will design and implement multi-disciplinary research that will explore the underlying factors affecting biting arthropods’ ability to transmit pathogens and their role in the emergence and evolution of pathogens. By integrating expertise from various fields, your work will enhance our understanding of the capacity of local biting arthropods to transmit and spread endemic and exotic pathogens. Findings will contribute to developing evidence-based public health intervention plans to mitigate vector-borne disease risk in Singapore.

You are required to apply advanced concepts and technologies to innovate and develop new methodologies related to vector-pathogen interactions. You will also be involved in other studies to support Singapore’s vector surveillance and control programme and expected to publish findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The successful candidate will be working closely with international and local scientific experts. Excellent communication (written and oral), leadership skills and sound judgement are required.

The successful candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary environment, where his/her research is translated into evidence-based public health programmes and policies. The candidate is expected to gather insights and implement initiatives to enhance NEA’s operational capabilities in high containment facilities for bio-hazard materials. You will be involved in various activities including, but not limited to, experimental design, work process enhancement, sample preparation and assay development, and its necessary procurement and stockpiling efforts. You will be operating in a fast-paced and dynamic environment that would require the ability to manage multiple priorities and stakeholders at the same time.

Requirements:

• Relevant life sciences, microbiology or quantitative data analysis experience/training. Applicants of non-relevant background may also be considered.
