The Specialty Clinic Assistant Nurse Manager is directly responsible to the Nurse Manager of Specialty Clinics. The Assistant Nurse Manager accepts direct oversight and leadership from Nurse Mangers for unit-based tasks and assigned duties. The duties are split to include direct patient care assignments/duties and as a designated second-line leadership authority, responsibility, and accountability for the operations of their units, ensuring that subordinate personnel provide timely nursing care which complies with generally accepted standards of clinical practice. This includes the authority to accept, amend or reject the work of subordinates. In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, the charge nurses and will collaborate with the NODs on the off tours.
The Assistant Nurse Manager responsibilities includes the following functions: 1) Planning work to be accomplished by subordinates, setting priorities and preparing schedules for completion of work; 2) Assigning work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and the requirements of the assignments and the capabilities of subordinates; 3) Providing input for evaluating the performance of subordinates; 4) Making recommendations for appointments, advancements or reassignments of subordinates; 5) Giving advice, counsel or instruction to subordinate personnel on work and administrative matters; 6) Hearing and resolving complaints of subordinates and referring more serious complaints not resolved to higher level supervisors; 7) Recommending disciplinary action when appropriate; and 8) Identifying developmental and training needs of subordinates and providing or making provision for such development and training (VA Handbook 5007, Part Ill, Chapter 8) 9) Providing recovery-based care to assigned patients and providing coverage based on unit needs and staffing. The Medical Home Port Nurse Manager is a professional registered nurse, qualified by education and experience to provide direct staff support and supervision of care (24 hours per day/7 days per week) in planning, designing, integrating, implementing, modifying, and evaluating the effectiveness of services to improve the quality of patient care and the appropriateness and timeliness of services provided. The Educational Programs Nurse Manager will manage a Planned Curriculum with Training Opportunities for Post-Baccalaureate Registered-Nurse Residency (PB-RNR) and the Registered Nurse Transition to Practice Program (RN TPP). To comply with office of Academic Affiliates (OAA) centrally funded residency model, Educational Programs Nurse Manager will ensure that trainees will have 100% protected time to master the complexities of caring for Veterans. This 12 month inter-professional training program will be completed in 3 phases. All 3 phases will incorporate experiential and didactic requirements outlined by OAA. The following paragraphs outline an overview of the 3 phases that represent the progression from novice to competent professional nurse. This in return will provide the foundation for the professional growth and development of out future workforce.
Phase I is a novice nurse and will consist of building confidence and mastering basic skills in assessing the mental, physical, and psychosocial care needs of the veteran population. The review of these components is critical to ensuring veterans receive a comprehensive and evidence based practice delivery of care.
Phase II, the advanced beginner nurse will further the fundamental skills with continuous guidance and some independence by increasing their knowledge regarding the unique complexities of caring for Veterans. Furthermore, the RN residents will master bedside procedures and become competent in the general core competencies. Great emphasis will be placed on team communication and working with the interdisciplinary care team.
Phase III, the RN resident is expected to be a competent nurse and will receive individualized training for the areas he/ she is interested in seeking employment at the conclusion of the residency program. This will allow the residents to be prepared and ready to transition into their new role and to enhance their clinical skills and confidence as an experienced Nurse.
The RN Transition-to-Practice Program is a comprehensive 12-month curriculum designed to assist the newly licensed RN the transition from entry-level nurse to competent professional RN.
Courses focus on refinement of clinical competencies, and development of professional nursing roles and leadership characteristics. The program applies a variety of educational strategies, including:
