Rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, we support families across Surrey, north-west London and south-west London from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care. Our specialist care and support is free of charge to families and available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It includes specialist nursing in the community, symptom management, overnight respite stays, end-of-life care, specialist bereavement care and a comprehensive range of therapies, groups and clinics for the whole family. At the heart of what we do are our dedicated staff; their exceptional commitment and professionalism means every family has the opportunity to make every moment count. It costs £10 million a year to run Shooting Star Childrens Hospices. Just 30% of our funding comes from the government, so we rely on our supporters generosity to keep the service running. We employ 175 members of staff, including 98 nursing and medical staff, and support around 700 families. The Hospice Care Team An exciting opportunity has arisen at the hospice for a research fellow to work with the specialist palliative care team and wider hospice teams at Shooting Star Childrens Hospices (SSCH). Research is at the core of the services that we offer, and the successful applicant will be required to work with the Research Governance group to continue to develop our research programme, strategy and with the clinical teams service development and data management projects. This role is able to be offered as a hybrid working pattern with 3 days in the hospice and 2 days remote working. To carry out and assist in data collection (including qualitative interviewing techniques) for research projects with CYP and/or their families. To design and maintain databases (e.g., using MACRO) and to use specialist statistical packages as appropriate (e.g., SPSS) for the analysis of research data in liaison and consultation with the research group. To prepare reports and presentations for review meetings and progress of research projects. To comply with research study protocols, standard operational procedures and Hospice / Trust policies related to data security, confidentiality and health and safety. Be involved with the financial processes associated with coordinating research studies and grant applications. To present research findings in the form of published papers, reports, presentations, or summaries internally, nationally and internationally. Act as a resource to staff and contribute to their professional and educational development Act as expert resource for staff and researchers preparing submissions for regulatory approval. To support projects for the specialist service (3 days) and the wider hospice (2 days). To support the development and compliance of research governance infrastructure in the organisation. Report any poor research processes that compromise patient safety and study protocols. To ensure that all research is documented, and that all relevant documentation is completed accurately and within agreed timescales using Shooting Star Childrens Hospices approved documentation in line with NMC, CQC and Shooting Star Childrens Hospice standards. To lead and take decisions on requests from externals teams for Shooting Star to participate within their research in consultation with the Research Governance Group. Service development: To participate in the parent involvement/research advisory group. To undertake presentations and teaching with multi-disciplinary staff to a variety of audiences as required and lead journal club. To assist in the design and implementation of service development projects as pertinent to the role, following policies To undertake project management, including audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within the care teams to help develop and improve services to patients and their families. To undertake evidence-based literature searches and reviews to assist the Care teams in implementing evidence-based practice. To be active in the research strategy, plan and lead stakeholder events. Data management support for SPACE team: To collect, analyse and present data for SPACE team (specialist paediatric palliative care) which is based at SSCH. To use computer-based applications e.g. excel, PowerPoint for entry, analysis and presentation of data. To create quarterly reports of service data and present to relevant teams for service monitoring and development and to the SSCH clinical governance group Other: To maintain up to date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, and issues in relation to the role. The successful candidates will be given full training at SpR level in a broad spectrum of Cardiology, both on our acute Cardiology ward (including an 6 bedded CCU) and in outpatients. You will join a team of 14 Consultant Cardiologists, 2 specialist trainees and 13 Specialist Nurses in Cardiology Trust wide. There is a full range of cardiac imaging modalities available across the Trust including MRI, CT and echo (transthoracic, stress, contrast, bubble and transesophageal). Diagnostic angiography and a pacing suite that undertakes simple and complex implantable device procedures runs on the NSECH site.

Clinical Ensure care to patients is delivered according to Trust policies and procedures and the research protocol. Manage the day-to-day care and monitoring of patients participating in a variety of studies including treatment studies. Attend multi-disciplinary meetings, appropriate clinics and utilise database searches to assess volunteers/patients for eligibility and recruitment of new participants. Ensure that trial specific investigations are undertaken as required by the research protocol in order to establish eligibility and safety to enter the trial. Act as a resource to the members of the MDT. Communicate information regarding decisions to patients, carers and the MDT as required. Perform investigations/procedures including but not restricted to venepuncture, blood pressures, height, weight, urinalysis, faecal sampling, in accordance with the study protocol and local standard operating procedures. Take relevant samples as required by the study protocol such as blood samples, package and dispatch as defined. Academic duties The Welsh Centre for Emergency Medicine Research offers exposure to a full range of research activities. The Centre undertakes quite detailed laboratory based work in the form of preclinical modelling, and a large range of both clinical and epidemiological studies. Although the candidate will be exposed to a wide range of research activities, the candidate will be encouraged to focus on an area or study of their choice. This role will give the candidate the opportunity to gain a wider understanding of research methodology and trial design (i.e. statistical design, hypothesis generating concepts).
