The Opportunity
Come and discover the opportunity to join our Analysis and Compliance Testing team at our Central Laboratory facility, located in Port Kembla, NSW – as an Industrial Chemist (Organics). As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.
The Analysis and Compliance Testing team are responsible for all areas of environmental sample testing management at the Port Kembla manufacturing facility. Working in a supportive team environment, as the Industrial Chemist (Organics), you will be primarily focused on preparation and analysis of samples for organic constituents using Gas Chromatography (GC).
With your willingness to learn, we will support you with on-going training and development.
Apply your instrumentation and organic chemistry skills together with a supportive team at our Central Laboratory facility. This opportunity is a full-time, 24-month fixed term contract. What Will You Do?
Showcase your analytical chemistry skills, attention to detail, planning skills and your ability to work in a team. Whilst growing your knowledge and skills, you will also:
- use safe laboratory practices to prepare environmental and industrial samples for analysis (e.g., BTX (Benzene, Toluene and xylene), VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), PAH (Poly aromatic Hydrocarbons))
- operate GC and GC-MS (Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry) instruments for analysis
- process results from instruments and assess data based on acceptance criteria
- analyse tar, lubricants, and solids using classical chemistry techniques
- ensure all testing and routine calibrations are performed to our laboratory NATA accreditation and Laboratory Quality Systems and take any necessary corrective actions.
More About You
As a self-motivated individual, you quickly adapt, with flexibility and can juggle more than one task. You will also bring:
- a tertiary qualification in Chemistry or related
- experience in Gas Chromatography would be highly regarded
- knowledge of QA/QC requirements within a NATA accredited testing laboratory
- the ability to work independently while contributing to the greater team’s success
