Exciting Opportunity: Connected Car TCU Design Engineer
Location: Cranfield
Salary: £29.60 per hour (equivalent to £60,028 annually)
We are currently seeking a highly skilled Connected Car TCU Design Engineer to join a globally recognised automotive company based in Cranfield. This is a long-term contract role, offering an excellent opportunity to contribute to the development of cutting-edge automotive technology.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop TCU software improvements to enhance features and quality for mass production vehicles in the AMEIO region.
• Establish a robust FOTA (Firmware Over-The-Air) process for quick deployment to the market.
• Generate and release TCU configuration data.
• Manage Tier 1 suppliers to ensure the delivery of products meets Quality, Cost, and Timing targets.
• Coordinate in-house and supplier TCU validation to meet design standards before new software releases.
• Collaborate with Off Board Connected Car teams, test teams, and customer-oriented engineering teams to confirm connected car functionality and performance.
• Work closely with Sales, Marketing, and Purchasing teams to align technical solutions with business objectives.
• Collaborate with related engineering sections to ensure proper packaging and connection of all system components, meeting design and regulation requirements.
• Provide regular status reports to management at all levels.
• Manage project KPIs (Cost, Quality, Delivery) and development schedules.
• Generate and implement cost optimization ideas.
• Oversee post-SOP (Start of Production) quality improvement activities.
• Contribute to telematics feature development.
• Conduct component and system design reviews.
Qualifications & Experience:
• 2+ years' experience in automotive electrical and electronic development or equivalent experience on a major development program.
• Understanding and experience in telematics system development.
• Experience in managing Tier 1 suppliers for complex electronic product development.
• Familiarity with IoT and vehicle-level protocols (MQTT, TCP/IP, CAN, UDS, Ethernet).
• Experience in liaising with 3rd party telematics service providers and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
• Coordination of complex Bill of Materials (BOM) releases.
• Effective communication skills in a cross-cultural and cross-functional team environment.
• Proactive approach and ability to self-manage.
• Flexibility regarding working practices and hours.
• Availability for occasional international travel (typically a few days to 2 weeks).

We are recruiting for a Connected Car TCU Design Engineer (new product development) for one of our automotive clients based in Cranfield.
You will be working for a globally recognised automotive company.
This is a long-term contract role. The contract is on an ongoing basis a may run for several years.
Key Responsibilities of the Connected Car TCU Design Engineer:
• Development of in-vehicle telematics systems for client’s products sold across the AMEIO region.
• Generation and release of TCU configuration data
• Managing Tier 1 suppliers to deliver products to Quality, Cost & Timing targets.
• Coordination of in house and supplier TCU validation to client’s design standards ahead of new software releases
• Collaboration with Off Board Connected Car team, test teams (both on-board and off-board) and customer orientated engineering team to confirm connected car functionality & performance
• Collaborate with Sales and Marketing teams to ensure technical solution supports business objective
• Collaborate with purchasing to support sourcing and cost definition/optimisation tasks.
• Collaborate with related engineering sections to ensure all system components are packaged and connected correctly to meet all system design and regulation requirements.
• Status reporting to management at all levels.
Qualifications & Experience for the Connected Car TCU Design Engineer:
• 2+ years’ experience in automotive electrical and electronic development or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience on a major development program.
• Understanding and experience of telematics system development is a must.
• Experience managing Tier 1 suppliers in the development of complex electronic products.
• Understanding of both IOT and vehicle level protocols (MQTT, TCP/IP, CAN, UDS, Ethernet).
• Experience liaising with 3rd party telematics service providers and MNO’s
• Experience co-ordinating complex BOM releases.
• Ability to communicate effectively in a cross cultural and cross functional team.
• A pro-active approach and ability to self-manage.
• Flexibility regarding working practice and working hours.
• Availability to travel abroad, typically a few days to 2 weeks, but on rare occasions could be longer.
• Competency with PC applications. MS office, Image editing etc.
