MAJOR DUTIES:
The Engineering Equipment Operator Leader operates medium to large heavy equipment such as 3.5 yd wheel loaders, backhoes, skid steers, 6 ton dump truck and other types of heavy equipment over rough terrain, on steep slopes, graded curves, shoulders and rocky or soft ground to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth by skillful spot maneuvering for front end loader or backhoe operation. Grades surfaces, compacts soils, or rolls to exact specifications on flat or rolling terrain. Adjusts attachments for proper positioning and working order without stopping the power unit or the equipment. The incumbent steers and operates by using clutches, levers, brakes, and valves according to the slope or tilt. Operates close to buildings, trees, drop-offs, rocks, buried power lines and other utility lines, or other obstructions. S/he leads the work section in daily operations and trains personnel in the proper operation of all departmental equipment. The incumbent both leads and performs weather related response with heavy equipment and is responsible to maintain all departmental equipment in proper working order. Working along with other workers and setting the pace. Seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy. Checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. incumbent serves as the Work Leader in the interment's operations unit at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. A team consisting of 3 WG-5716-08 Engineering Equipment Operators; 5 WG-5703-07 Motor Vehicle Operators; and 8 WG-4754-06 Cemetery Caretakers and up to 6 WG-4754-04/05 Cemetery Caretaker seasonal employees in the accomplishment of cemetery operations activities. These include but are not limited to excavating first and subsequent interments, setting headstones and markers, raising/realigning, cleaning of headstones and markers, renovation, and removal of trash and debris. Duties will include inspections of first and second interments and duties required to complete first and second interments. Duties will also include the digging of first interments and the renovations of the first interment areas and graves.
Passes on to other workers instructions received from supervisors. Responsible for getting work started on time ensures compliance with prescribed times for break, lunch, and end of day. Sets the pace, motivates, and advises employees on proper procedures in the accomplishment of tasks. Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work.
