The Legislative Policy and Research Office (LPRO) is recruiting limited-duration Session Committee Assistants to serve the state legislature during the 2024 Legislative Session.
Session Committee Assistants work closely with analyst colleagues and regularly interact with members of the public, stakeholders, and elected officials to facilitate the committee process. The successful candidate will provide administrative support to committees and will be assigned to work with LPRO, the Legislative Fiscal Office (LFO), or the Legislative Revenue Office (LRO).
The ideal candidate for this position can work independently with limited direct supervision and collaboratively with other committee staff. We seek individuals who are reliable, responsible, well-organized, and capable of performing administrative support functions requiring discretion, independent judgment, decision-making, and problem resolution.
Responsibilities include:
- providing neutral, nonpartisan administrative support to legislative committees;
- providing logistical coordination and support for in-person, remote, and hybrid meetings, including producing meeting agendas, preparing meeting spaces, facilitating public testimony, and producing and publishing recording logs;
- operating recording equipment, and maintaining meeting decorum;
- recording motions/votes, producing and filing committee reports, and maintaining and processing sensitive and private documents;
- responding to general inquiries for information about legislative committees and procedures.
The work of Session Assistants takes place on-site in Salem, in offices at the Public Service Building or the Oregon State Capitol. There may be opportunities for occasional remote work depending on work assignments and when it aligns with legislative needs as determined by the Appointing Authority.
IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE DEMONSTRATED WORK EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS IN:
- coordinating and organizing work efficiently;
- remaining nonpartisan while working with politically sensitive issues;
- reviewing documents for accuracy and completeness;
- maintaining filing systems;
- MS Office suite and able to quickly learn new software programs;
- using virtual meeting platforms such as Microsoft Teams, and
- prior legislative experience.

Positions will begin January 22, 2024, and end as committees close at the end of the 2024 Legislative Session. (Typically, late February)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Associates Degree; and
- One (1) year of clerical/secretarial experience performing typing and word processing functions, providing customer/client service, and providing clerical coordination for a project, program, or organization.
OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the position.
An additional degree may substitute for one year of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in office administration, business management, public administration, or political science; and
- Understanding of and experience working in a legislative process

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
- Over the next two years, the Capitol Building will be undergoing extensive renovation and construction projects which may limit accessibility to employees. This will require Legislative employees to work both from home and within the building as the construction project dictates. While working from home, personal, stable and high-speed internet access will be required to perform the functions of this position. There may be occasions that require employees scheduled to be working from home, to report to the Capitol or an offsite building. Every effort will be made to provide reasonable notice. However, employees may be required to report to the building under short notice. The Capitol building is located at 900 Court Street NE, Salem, OR 97301.

- The salary in this job posting reflects the base salary without contributions to the Public Employee Retirement System (PERS). Employees eligible for PERS will have their salary increased by roughly 6.95% and 6% will automatically be subject to a mandatory employee contribution to PERS.
