Your new role
You will be joining a research group to identify funding opportunities, write grants for these and support publications/submissions to research journals. There is also plenty of opportunity to feed into the group's wider research plans and topics, using your background and expertise to advise on potential new areas or troubleshooting ideas.
Projects will be focused around cancer research, from helping to understanding disease mechanisms and biology through to drug / biomarker discovery and development.
This position can be offered at different levels and so could suit someone who is an experienced grant writer/scientist or someone looking to step up into this position with training and support offered to help with this transition.
Main responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
- Identifying funding or grant opportunities from various funding bodies / research organisations;
- Lead the writing and submission of grant submissions and funding proposals, working closely with group members;
- Support the writing and optimisation of research papers, eg submissions to peer-reviewed journals;
- Help coordinate research meetings within the group and wider institute;
- Involvement in lab recruitment and training, with a view to taking on supervision or management for more experienced candidates;
- Help with technical troubleshooting on research, as well as providing ideas on new research projects;
- Support the administrative running of the lab / group;
- Working closely with other researchers / collaborators both internal and with external partners, eg within the pharmaceutical & biotech industry or academic research centres.
Training, personal development and support will be provided for this role in a number of aspects, including potential instruction in various molecular biology and computational techniques.
There is also an established centralised team that can support and train candidates.
What you'll need to succeed
As well as strong communication, teamworking and organisational skills, you should have:
- A BSc, MSc or PhD (or equivalent experience) in a Life Sciences or technical subject, such as Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or a related area
- A track record of writing grants for submission to funding bodies and/or scientific publications to peer reviewed journals
- The ability to manage multiple tasks/projects, often with competing timelines
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a high level of written communication skills
- The ability to work independently and as part of a wider team
Candidates with the following are preferred, but as full training will be provided, there is no absolute requirement to have:
- Experience or an interest in: protein purification, crystallography, cell culture, molecular biology, computational biology or cancer research;
Project and/or people leadership - either from line management or supervision.
