We Require
Three or more years of clinical or medical epidemiology experience practicing at a federal, state, or local health department or other public clinical setting such as a Federally Qualified Healthcare Center or Veteran’s Affairs healthcare setting.
Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
Completion of approved medical residency or fellowship training program
Board certification in medical or surgical specialty
A valid, unrestricted license to practice allopathic or osteopathic medicine in the State of Arizona must be attained within 90 days of hire and maintained throughout employment

Job Contributions
Support the Medical Director with the direction of clinical services within the Department of Public Health (TB, STD, adult immunization, refugee services, Hansen’s disease, and radiology) and provide direct medical evaluations, consultation, and treatment of patients and ensure the provision of appropriate follow-up. Review recommendations for treatment of patients made by healthcare providers in the community and ensure appropriate course of action
Ensure the work of clinical staff providing services meets standards of and is aligned with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance, other national healthcare practice standards, and MCDPH written healthcare management policies. Support the Medical Director with the direction of in-house quality assurance and peer review activities related to clinical services provided by the Community Health and Records Division staff
Actively monitor recommendations, guidance, and best practices published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, other national healthcare practice standards, and the Arizona Department of Health Services. Support the Medical Director with the development of and ensuring alignment with MCDPH written healthcare management policies and procedures accordingly
Consult with healthcare facilities, healthcare providers, and other public health partners about TB, STD, refugee services, Hansen’s disease, and radiology and ensure consultations provided by other clinical staff are aligned with guidance by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, other national healthcare practice standards, and MCDPH written healthcare management policies
Supervise and serve as a preceptor for healthcare workers in training. Support the Medical Director and other MCDPH staff with developing and updating training curriculums. Prepare and deliver presentations for the education and training of health professionals, public health staff, Health and Human Services Constellation staff, first responders, partner agencies, community organizations, members of the healthcare community, and the general public
On a rotational basis, serve as the physician on-call to receive high-priority public health reports during night, weekend, and holiday hours and provide medical or infection control guidance to healthcare providers. Train and serve as backup to other clinical on-call staff regarding clinical management of TB, STD, refugee services, and Hansen’s disease, including prescribing treatment, post-exposure prophylaxis, and other medical interventions to control the spread of communicable diseases, toxins, and radiation
Act as medical spokesperson for the Community Health and Records Division and respond to requests for expertise from the medical community, other governmental agencies, and the media. Respond to all public health emergencies incidents of public health significance as assigned
Working Conditions
This position is primarily office-based, with extensive computer work using various moderately complex databases
This position will oversee clinical staff at satellite locations and must be willing to travel to other MCDPH satellite locations
Valid Arizona driver’s license is required upon hire
Valid BLS for healthcare providers' certification is required within 90 days of hire
Ability to work under stressful conditions related to death and disease
Strict adherence to confidentiality policies is required
Will be assigned to on-call coverage on a rotational basis and may be subject to working non-standard hours or days based on need
Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available as directed in the event of a public health emergency
Within one month of hire, all employees are required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (Whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
