Position Summary:

The Assistant Director, Corporate and Foundation Research Relations (CFRR), will be a key contributor to the growth of Cornell Tech’s corporate and foundation-sponsored research portfolio.
The Assistant Director will primarily be a resource for faculty and researchers who are seeking to attract funding for initiatives and projects, prioritizing multi-faculty, campus-wide research efforts. In instances where activities lead to industry-related opportunities in other areas within the institution, the Assistant Director, CFFR, will serve as a connector to other departments within Cornell Tech, e.g., External Affairs, Studio, Career Management, Executive Education, Entrepreneurship, Events, Real Estate.
As part of the Research Administration Support Team, this position is Cornell Tech’s principal liaison with corporations and foundations related to research engagements, and is responsible for planning, facilitation, and management of Cornell Tech initiatives with them. This position works closely with faculty and staff to align research and impact activities with corporate and foundation interests. The incumbent must understand and communicate effectively the scientific, technical, educational, financial and human resource aspects of campus programs. The individual helps to identify and implement strategies, activities, communications, and coordinated outreach to enhance corporate/campus partnerships and to cultivate, solicit, and steward these constituencies for support of campus programs.
The position collaborates with campus leaders in areas including External Affairs and Communications, the Studio Program, Career Management, Alumni Affairs and Development, Executive Education, and the Jacobs Institute to ensure a coordinated, comprehensive approach to interactions with industry/foundations.
In addition to being a key member of the Cornell Tech team, the individual will closely coordinate and collaborate with the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at the Bowers Cornell College of Computing and Information Sciences in Ithaca, as there are many industry relationships with shared interest in both entities, as well as similar functions within other Cornell academic units. The incumbent will also work closely with colleagues in Ithaca including the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, and the Division of Alumni Affairs & Development.
The position assists the faculty and staff in corporate proposal development and partners with CFR staff at the university to promote Cornell Tech, develop initiatives, and submit funding proposals.
Position Responsibilities: -40%
- Conduct prospecting research to identify potential industry partners, based on a developed understanding of faculty needs.
- Stay abreast of industry trends and developments as they relate to areas of campus research focus.
- Conduct business development outreach to create connection and partnership opportunities for the campus. Proactively identify and foster new relationships that will assist in furthering the goals of the campus. Coordinate planning and outreach with the External Affairs team to ensure alignment with Cornell Tech’s overall public engagement strategy.
- Promote the campus to corporations and foundations by coupling the research and impact activities on the campus to corporate and foundation interests.
- Partnering with Communications and Marketing team and other appropriate stakeholders on campus to co-develop and maintain marketing and communication channels to promote campus research, including websites, pitch decks, marketing materials, newsletters, etc.
- Work with research and impact center representatives, faculty, the campus directors of communications, the Studio Program, Career Services, the university director of corporate and foundation relations, and campus Alumni and Development staff to ensure a coordinated, comprehensive approach to interactions with industry/foundations.
- Assess and document successful cultivation strategies with specific companies and foundations and plan improvements when necessary.
Collaborating with Faculty on Partnerships: -30%
- Develop and manage relationships with faculty members and other researchers to cultivate a strong understanding of campus research activity and areas of need.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff on potential sources of industry or foundation partnerships and support.
- Research, develop, and implement best practices and strategies for interaction with corporations and foundations, including communications, program promotion, proposal development, and delivery of affiliate group benefits programs.
- Manage a customer relationship management (CRM) database or comparable solution to track prospects and engagements across research initiatives.
Proposals Development and Stewardship: -20%
- Develop, and present proposals to corporations and foundations to obtain financial support for the campus research and educational mission, focusing on research, and other strategic needs.
- Work with Research Administration Support Team to ensure appropriate post-award management to meet stewardship requirements and reporting needs
- Manage reporting, financial tracking, gift records, and other systems required to track and communicate research related corporate and foundation activity on the campus.
Other Position-Related Responsibilities: -10%
- Provide leadership and management oversight for operational teams that provide sponsored research administration, and post-award stewardship.
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Participate in occasional work responsibility falling above or below current classification
Required Qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in business development, corporate outreach, public relations, or similar area; demonstrated team collaboration and facilitation, organization, and project management skills.
- Prior experience in proactively developing corporate/university partnerships is highly desirable.
- Ability to understand and communicate technical, scientific, and educational activities essential.
- Experience in a research-intensive higher education institution, working directly with faculty and researchers to promote research initiatives is desirable.
- Proven effective written and verbal communication skills, including the proven ability to conceive, develop, and write proposals that result in action.
- Must be team-oriented, self-directed, and able to effectively manage priorities and projects.
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing
- Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.
- Proven experience connecting diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing practices to business goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree;
- Experience in development, fundraising, public affairs, and/or marketing extremely helpful.
- An interest in engineering, computer science, and information science research and enthusiasm for working closely with investigators strongly preferred.
