As a Science and Operations Officer, you will perform the following duties:
- Serve as the office supervisor when designated and serve as Senior Forecaster on shift duty approximately 25% of the time.
- Evaluate the technical and scientific adequacy of all Weather Forecast Office (WFO) hydrometeorological products and services and implement improvements where needed.
- Initiate, plan, coordinate, and oversee the transfer of new and emerging scientific technologies and techniques from the research community to the operational environment.
- Develop and facilitate necessary training and professional development activities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Rotating shift work is required with the WFO and/or National Center in operation 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During periods of threatening weather or rapidly changing weather conditions, the increase in workload and the necessity for rapid dissemination of weather warnings and updates requires periods of acute mental ness and produces considerable mental stress. Adverse weather conditions often require the incumbent to work hours longer than the usual shift, adding to mental and physical stress.
