Summary

Performs daily imaging and delivers daily prescribed therapeutic radiation doses to radiation therapy patients safely and accurately.

Job Description

This position is for PRN coverage in both Sioux Falls, South Dakota and for Worthington, Minnesota. The successful candidate will utilize their strong communication skills and specialized radiotherapy knowledge to provide compassionate patient-centered care in an open and communicative Radiation Oncology team. Sioux Falls equipment includes two main treatment vaults with TrueBeams (one standard MLC and one High Def MLC).  Both TrueBeams have 6 dof couches and VisionRT surface guidance to support our active stereotactic and breath-hold programs. A third treatment vault utilizes an Accuray Tomotherapy for specialized cases. Worthington equipment uses one Truebeam (6 dof couch and standard MLC) and a Cannon CT scanner, and Varian IDENTIFY for surface guiadance.  Both departments use Varian Aria v16 and Sun Nuclear software products and equipment are used for daily QA.

The radiation therapist incorporates their technical knowledge of the equipment and expertise of clinical treatment set-up, anatomical landmarks, treatment recording and management during patient care. The therapist must be able to interact effectively and accurately with patients and their family members, physicians, healthcare workers, and radiation oncology department personnel. Possesses the skills and knowledge necessary to be proficient in accurate delivery of prescribed doses of radiation, safety of patient during treatment, and documentation of patient care in the patient treatment record and inpatient chart (if applicable). A patient's sensitivity and confidentiality must be practiced at all times with adherence all HIPAA compliance standards. The therapist develops an understanding of the patient's physical and emotional status and reports that to the appropriate staff. Ability to work with growth and development needs of all client populations.

Qualifications

Completion of radiation therapy course from an approved school or accredited program.



Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) is required. If working in North Dakota and performing medical imaging or radiation therapy procedures, licensure through the North Dakota Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (NDMIRT) Board of Examiners is required.

• Responsible for completing initial assessment for patient’s referred to pulmonary rehabilitation. Is able to accurately assess the physical and psychosocial condition of a patient with each visit based on the initial assessment and disease process. Will adhere to AACVPR guidelines. The Medical Tank Bank is monitored and maintained.
• Appropriately completes individualized treatment plans, and documents absences with an accurate reason for all pulmonary rehabilitation patients. Initial pulmonary rehabilitation assessments; including six minute walk test, individualized treatment plans, and supervised exercised sessions are charted.
• Participates and assists in meetings, projects and in-services relative to improvement of RHS Respiratory Care Services.
• Utilizes proper infection control techniques in performance of duties and in accordance with departmental procedures.
• Provides the patients with a complete individualized treatment plan and patient instruction for all equipment and procedures used during class and testing. Provides patients with visual, audio, and pamphlet education for medication and disease processes.

They assist with diagnostic and interventional bronchoscopy. They collaborate with the pulmonologist and interventionist to assure oxygenation and ventilation achieved at optimal levels with varied methods that include oscillation and bi-level ventilation.

What you will do

• Assesses, diagnoses, implements, and evaluates the treatment and procedures that contribute to the Respiratory Care Plan. Conducts, performs, and analyzes diagnostic and function tests to assess lung capacity and capability.
• Provides frontline management of critical airway/life sustaining patient situations and needs through modalities from non-invasive support through direct laryngoscopy and endotracheal intubations.
• Collaborates with the pulmonologist and interventionist to assure oxygenation and ventilation is achieved at optimal levels with varied methods that include oscillation and bi-level ventilation.
• Assists with diagnostic and interventional bronchoscopy.
• Administers respiratory therapy treatments and evaluates the effects by observing, documenting, and evaluating patient's progress and recommends adjustments and modifications. Monitors physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.
• Restores patient's pulmonary function, alleviates pain, and supports life by planning and administering medically prescribed respiratory therapy.
• Supports the discharge planning of patients. Designs home exercise programs and instructs patient, families, and caregivers on these exercises.

JOB SUMMARY

The Respiratory Therapist supports the Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS) in delivering inpatient and outpatient respiratory therapy services to patients from neonatal to geriatric, under the direction of physicians and administration. In this role, the individual is accountable to deliver established goals, utilizes good judgment to assess and escalate situations when warranted and utilizes knowledge and skills in the area of expertise while maintaining expected quality standards. The individual must act as a healthcare leader by building constructive relationships and by supporting department leadership in developing, setting and executing department goals and the strategic plan in accordance with Marshfield Clinic Health System’s mission statement.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Associate Degree, Diploma, or Certification in a Respiratory Therapy Program.

EXPERIENCE 

Minimum Required: Experience working with mechanical ventilation of patients from neonatal to geriatric.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

Minimum Required:

• Respiratory Care Practitioner license awarded by the State of Wisconsin AND
• Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential awarded by the National Board for Respiratory Care, and maintain the active credential per NBRC Guidelines.
  • If Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential is not current at time of hire, it must be obtained within two years of hire or by 7/1/2022 if hired prior to 6/30/2019.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.
• For positions treating patients in intensive care units (ICU):
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications awarded by the American Heart Association within one year of hire.

Preferred/Optional: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.  Certified Pulmonary Function Technician (CPFT) and Registered Pulmonary Function Technician (RPFT) awarded by the National Board for Respiratory Care at time of hire.

Casual position: 24 hours in 6 week schedule or two 12 hour shifts in 6 weeks. Days, nights options contingent upon unit need
