What you will do

The incumbent is responsible for providing an art therapy that addresses the full range of patients and families' needs from early diagnosis to end of life care and through into bereavement support. You will provide specialist input in direct service, education and training programmes within the hospice and to external agencies.

You will undertake audit and research to ensure best practice development for service users requiring supportive and palliative care and be responsible for maintaining the art materials and the working environment essential for art therapy to occur.

• To provide individual and group art therapy for both home hospice and day hospice patients and their families.
• To undertake the assessment of patients' emotional and psychological needs with regards to art therapy and plan and implement suitable interventions to address these needs.
• To actively develop good practice in art therapy
• To maintain confidentiality in dealing with patients, their therapy and care.
• To work as a full member of the multi-disciplinary team and attend team meetings, multi-disciplinary meetings and other meetings as appropriate.
• To advise the multi-disciplinary team and staff in the community, as appropriate, on issues relating to art therapy and act as a resource for other members of the wider team with regards to art therapy issues.
• To ensure accuracy and proper updates of documentations.

The Early Intervention for Children (EIC) Services helps equip children with motor, communication, social, self-help and cognitive skills. THK EIC involves structuring classes around small groups encompassing early childhood special education, social work and therapy support services to stimulate their adaptive functioning and school readiness skills.

Role  

The Art Therapist is to work with children and families of all ages and backgrounds using the visual arts as a medium for healing, awareness and self-development. The aim is to help their clients express intense emotion and explore their thoughts in a non-verbal way, using a wide range of art materials. The intention is not a focus on the artistic skills of the client but their engagement in a creative personal process. They work in either a group or one-to-one setting and provide a safe and secure environment for clients to work through their emotions. Art therapists also work closely with other professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team.  

Responsibilities  

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:  

• Taking referrals, including self-referrals and referrals from other professionals such as teachers, psychologists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists; 
• Making referrals to other professionals; 
• Attending meetings and case conferences to share ideas, expertise and good practice;
• Assessing the needs of the children and families by listening and providing guidance;
• Working creatively with various client groups in a therapeutic setting; 
• Working in a group or one-to-one setting, often as part of a multidisciplinary team of professionals; 
• Enabling clients to explore their art work and the process of its production; 
• Assessing and understanding the feelings or temperament of others;
• Constructively challenging the behaviour and attitude of clients;

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: Clinical Provide highly developed specialist psychological assessments, based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of complex data from a variety of sources (including psychological tests, measures/rating scales, direct and indirect observation and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and involved others.
