Job Description:
The Department of Community and Regional Planning (CRP) in the College of Design at Iowa State University is seeking to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor starting August 16, 2024.
The successful candidate will contribute to the missions of the department and college by teaching core courses in the online Masters of Community Development program, as well as community development/planning electives at the undergraduate and graduate levels. We seek an innovative and productive scholar interested in community development whose work focuses on one or more of the following:
- community engagement
- participatory, inclusive planning and social justice
- community resilience – social, economic, and environmental
At the Assistant Professor rank, we are seeking a candidate who has research, teaching, and professional expertise in the broadly defined area of community development and who uses a range of quantitative and qualitative methods, including, but not limited to, participatory action research and community-engaged research.
At the Associate Professor rank, we are seeking a candidate who has research, teaching, and professional expertise in the broadly defined area of community development and who will lead and grow our new online Masters of Community Development Program.
We invite candidates who have pedagogical knowledge and experience in virtual education. We expect the successful candidate to strengthen connections among our new online Masters in Community Development (MCD) program, our department programs, and community development related programs across the university. We are seeking a candidate who desires the opportunity to build and cultivate relationships with community development organizations across the state and the nation. The successful candidate should be able to develop and teach a variety of courses in their area(s) of expertise, at least two required courses in the online MCD curriculum (ISU MCD) and contribute to existing courses in the on-campus planning programs (BSCRP)(MCRP). We are looking for candidates who use a range of quantitative and qualitative methods, including, but not limited to, participatory action research and community-engaged research.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or D.Des. (or expected completion before August 2024) in urban planning, community development, rural sociology, geography, public policy, communication, or a closely related field.
- For applicants applying for the Associate Professor position, candidates must also meet the university standards for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor, including significant experience/accomplishments in the candidates’ area of expertise and the potential for national/international distinction.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Documented teaching experience
- Pedagogical knowledge and experience in virtual education
- Evidence/potential of a strong publication record
- Prior experience in the practice of community development, planning, and/or community engagement
- Evidence/potential of externally funded research
- Subject-area expertise in public participation/community development
