The starting salary is £20,696. Plus, you’ll receive an £800 increase in your pay every six months (and two even bigger increases in your final year). Plus, we’ll cover all the university fees.
Start your career with a splash.
Are you trying to decide between university and an apprenticeship? You know that getting a degree will be important if you want to become a Chartered Surveyor down the line. But you’re also keen to earn some money and gain practical experience.
A Graduate Apprenticeship offers the best of both worlds. Meaningful paid work experience, on-the-job training, alongside part time study at a top university.
Join us as an Engineering & Construction Project Management Graduate Apprentice, and in 4 years' time you’ll be graduating debt-free with a BEng (Hons) from either Strathclyde University or University of Highlands and Islands, and 4 years' of work experience under your belt. It’s an incredible way to start your career.
What you’ll do
Working with the guidance of experienced Engineers you’ll learn all about water industry engineering, and help support projects across a variety of specialisms, including Mechanics and Materials, Structural Analysis, Hydraulics, Mathematics and Planning and Project Management.
Over time you’ll learn how we plan major infrastructure projects, and how we work with other engineering and specialist firms to make those plans a reality and deliver projects that meet the highest industry standards.
Nothing is more important to us than safety – so expect to be working in a safety-first environment to make sure that you, your colleagues, and the public all go home safely every day.
What you’ll bring
Engineering is a challenging specialism, and you’ll be studying at undergraduate level. So, it’s important that you meet the university’s entry requirements.
You’ll need one of the following:
We will also accept relevant Foundation Apprenticeships which will be treated as equivalent to one SQA Higher at Grade B.
You will need to be fully committed to gaining your degree. Some of your learning will happen on campus. Some of it will happen at work. Both are equally important.
But it’s not all about qualifications. It’s also about mindset. While your full-time student friends might occasionally decide to have a lie in and skip an early morning lecture after a night out, that won’t be an option for you. You’re more likely to be kitting up in high vis to visit a construction site or attending a meeting with a partner firm at our Head Office.
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
Our normal working hours are 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday – but you may need to work outside of those hours occasionally depending on the project you’re working on. You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
A note to the ladies
Every year, more women are offered places on our apprenticeship programmes – and they’re thriving.
But despite our best efforts, women don’t apply for apprenticeships in the same numbers as men. Which means they are still under-represented in these sorts of roles. That’s something we would love to change.
So, to the ladies reading this, please don’t be deterred by stereotypes. Apprenticeships are for everybody. We’re looking for people who’d enjoy this kind of role. If that includes you, we absolutely want you to apply.
We have a strong network of women (and men!) across Scottish Water who will be there to support and encourage you every step of the way.
The not-so-small print
There will be some fun (no, honestly!) online assessment activity during late April. Interviews will happen during May. And we’re aiming to get all our new apprentices started on the 5 August.
A few final things worth knowing…
Research shows that some people avoid applying for jobs unless they can meet every single criteria. If you’re interested in this job, but don’t tick all the boxes, apply anyway! We hardly ever hire people who can do every part of a job from Day One. Everyone has a learning curve. So don’t rule yourself out!
Let us know if there are any changes we can make to our recruitment process to help you perform at your best. Lots of our people have disabilities or neurodiverse conditions (including some of our recruiters!). We're also aware that some people might be experiencing temporary challenges because of life events, like menopause. We’re very used to making adjustments, so please don’t be afraid to ask.
As part of our commitment to developing a flourishing Scotland, it’s important that all our employees are Scottish taxpayers. If you join us, your home address will need to be in Scotland. If you don’t already live here, you'll need to commit to moving here within your first three months.
Finally (finally!), candidates who haven’t submitted an application in the last 12 months will have their records removed from our recruitment database. You won’t need to do anything. Your data will be automatically deleted.
We’re here to help. Ask us anything at SWRecruitment@ScottishWater.co.uk
Closing date: 7 April 2024.
