As an Associate Ophthalmic Science Practitioner you will maintain the delivery of a high standard of clinical work across all areas. This includes performing Humphrey automated and Octopus manual visual fields, undertaking biometric assessment on patients using ultrasonography and optical biometry, performing optical coherence tomography and measurement of visual acuity and intra-ocular pressure. Work as a flexible member of the wider Ophthalmic team undertaking technical assessment on patients of all ages and who have various communication abilities and who have been referred from a variety of sources. To use analytical and judgement skills to tailor the delivery of care to the needs of individual patients and be able to adapt emotional, mental and physical responses appropriately. This requires maintaining concentration for prolonged periods whilst coping with the competing demands of unplanned daily clinical workload and frequent interruption. To demonstrate considerable manual dexterity and speed in a variety of clinical procedures to ensure accurate results and images. To participate in departmental audit and research projects as required. Ensure compliance with infection control procedures Ensure compliance with our clinical governance framework The successful candidate will be working with the multidisciplinary team in the Ophthalmology Department comprising of Orthoptists, Optometrists, Ophthalmologists, Technicians, OSPs, the nursing and admin teams. Ophthalmology is a busy department in a large teaching hospital and the Ophthalmic Technician and Ophthalmic Imaging services are extremely busy, with a mix of booked appointments and on demand services. Ophthalmology Services include eye casualty, day case, in-patient and outpatient facilities. It has strong links to the University of Nottingham through research and works closely with the regional Diabetic Eye Screening Service. We have a large team of Consultant Ophthalmologists, who provide outpatient and surgical services in a full range of Ophthalmology sub-speciality clinics. The post holder will be required to work various shifts to support the needs of the service. This includes working weekdays, weekends, bank holiday days and varying hours with the earliest start time at 7.00am and the latest finish at 8.00pm. As part of the team, you will be expected to perform a range of routine and more complex investigations some of which may be under the supervision of more experienced scientific and technical staff. You will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards the provision of an accurate and timely service for patients. Within the team you may be required to organise the tasks of support workers. The post holder will train technical colleagues with regard to diagnostic processes. The post holder will undertake the quality assurance tasks as required to maintain the laboratorys accreditation status. Healthcare Science associate practitioners will also undertake receipt of deliveries arriving into the laboratory including entering audit details into the laboratorys computerised chemical inventory system. The post holder is expected to participate in local CPD activities in order to maintain and improve knowledge, skills and competencies. There will be close day-to-day working relationship with Translational Genomics Unit, including shared use of space, equipment and other facilities. Study at Foundation Degree level must include biology and chemistry and a work-based module in Biomedical Science. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY Clinical, Diagnostic and Laboratory To perform, sometimes under supervision, appropriate technical laboratory procedures and tasks that are consistent with the job holders level of knowledge, skills and experience. To participate in departmental research and development projects, audit processes and support appropriate clinical trials involving the laboratory. Use of the following routine analytical laboratory techniques: polymerase chain reaction, fluorescent sequencing, fluorescent mutation detection methods and restriction digests. All require dexterity as they involve repetitive micropipetting of small accurately measured volumes, gel manipulation or use of automated analysers. Perform routine processing of samples in a class II microbiological safety cabinet and working to containment level 2+. Maintain a high level of accuracy and reliability in defined routine, preparative and associated procedures. The post holder is responsible for maintaining paper and computer records of diagnostic data including the entry of data in to the Patient Management system e.g. test requirements, worksheets, test results. The post holder may be required to contribute to troubleshooting of routine analytical laboratory techniques. Use considerable manual dexterity in the manipulation of a wide range scientific equipment. Perform unsupervised activities at the laboratory bench with a high degree of precision and accuracy. Employ good sterile technique to long-term tissue culture standards. Develop skills, as required, when new equipment or techniques are introduced into the laboratory. Participate in the routine internal audit requirements of the laboratory including checking tube alignments for members of staff prior to tube transfers e.g. during polymerase chain reaction tests. Preparation and running of agarose/acrylamide gels. This involves regularly work with carcinogens (e.g. ethidium bromide). Assist with the preparation of diagnostic and research patient samples for dispatch to other laboratories, including retrieval from storage, safe packaging and maintenance of associated paper and computer records. A Healthcare Science Associate Practitioner is part of a clinical support team whose purpose is to provide timely and accurate high quality scientific information that will assist service users from the hospital and community, in the establishment of a clinical diagnosis and monitoring of patient treatment. The Healthcare Science Associate will use practical skills to carry out tasks associated with the pre-analytical preparation of specimens within the Histopathology Department. The tasks undertaken are more advanced than those of an HSA. Specimen reception: To deal with the reception, sorting and labelling of patient specimens, identifying inadequate and mis-labelled specimens and ensuring urgent samples are prioritised. Recording specimen dissection descriptions, data entry including macroscopic descriptions onto APEX, preparing specimens for analysis, including booking in patient and specimen details, storing, retrieving and disposing of specimens. Assessing x-rays to determine end part of decalcification. Carefully prepare samples for diagnostic testing or storage. This may involve delicate procedures to manually handle category A samples, describe samples and place into labelled cassette matching necessary paperwork and documentation. As directed, undertake basic testing under supervision of BMS staff, record and enter results onto laboratory computer systems e.g. macroscopic descriptions of category A specimens. Assist in the training of new members of staff in the standard operational procedures required of them. As directed by BMS in technical charge of section, assist in the induction, basic training and competency assessment (as appropriate) of new or less experienced staff by demonstrating duties and providing advice and guidance. Loading/unloading tissue processors and initiating processing programmes. To carry out, under supervision, laboratory procedures: o Embedding.
