The Research & Innovation (R&I) Department at NUH is one of the focal points for clinical research in Nottingham and the East Midlands. Research is a top priority for NUH in relation to establishing outstanding research infrastructure and the recruitment of participants into research studies, offering cutting-edge treatments and opportunities for patients.
The broad ranging research portfolio includes approximately 1000 studies, supported by our National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) awarded since 2017, in partnership with our academic partner University of Nottingham. The R&I Department also manage the NIHR Nottingham Clinical Research Facility (CRF) located across three hospital sites, including dedicated in-patient and paediatric facilities.
The Research Data & Outputs Manager fulfils a key role within the R&I team, managing the requirements within the department, in addition to providing practical support with reporting functions across the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, NIHR Nottingham Clinical Research Facility, and wider research activities undertaken within the Trust.
The post holder will be responsible for producing clear and accurate data reports, and providing research business information to colleagues within the department and across the Trust. The post holder will need to work effectively with the R&I team, research colleagues, system suppliers, and wider stakeholders, including local and national research partners.
The post holder will be based at the Queens Medical Centre campus, but will be required to travel to the City Hospital campus and other locations as required. The post holder will also be required to work flexibly within the needs of the business to accommodate periods of peak workloads as required.

Data Management and Reporting
• Produce reports reflecting Research & Innovation and NIHR infrastructure activity for both internal performance management and external reporting to the NIHR and others, ensuring accuracy throughout.
• To fully comprehend and manage the varied reporting requirements of the Trust, NIHR, and other partners in order to produce timely reports, to a high quality in a timely manner, related to infrastructure reporting.
• Proactively ensure the accuracy and validity of data, raise and manage data queries, and ensure appropriate audit trails are in place, including verification with national data systems where necessary.
• With minimal supervision, develop and manage bespoke reports for various audiences, delegating to members of the team as appropriate.
• Maintain a good working knowledge of the data contained in research business data systems e.g. LPMS and CPMS, and how this can be accessed.
• Work with the wider research team and internal partners e.g. Key Support Services, to identify efficient working practices for research business data management, such as for study set up and delivery.
• Development of complex reporting using spreadsheets (e.g. MS Excel), including use for data capture, manipulation, and analysis.
• Regularly work interchangeably across multiple platforms.
• Write, review, and update SOPs and reporting guidelines.
• To lead the collection and maintenance of data required for national targets and metrics for research activities, including data input into external portals as required.
• To keep up-to-date with information practices and policies across the local partner organisations and in line with national requirements.
• Develop relationships with leads within the NIHR infrastructure to manage the flow of accurate information on a regular basis.
General role related
• Responsible for the line management of other individuals within the Business Information (BI) team, including supporting their development and growth within the department.
• Read and understand new legislation and national guidelines to stay up to date on the latest research governance processes (including information governance), changes in study designs, and national agenda.
• Maintain a familiarity with the NHS research lifespan, including terminologies and processes.
• Work flexibly to accommodate local and national requirements, including meeting hard deadlines on a regular basis.
• Regularly communicate with, and manage expectations of, different parties in an appropriate manner, including senior management.
• Understanding of the Trust and R&I strategy to identify areas of opportunity.
• Attend meetings on behalf of NUH R&I, both internally and externally, where appropriate.
• To work with the R&I IG lead to ensure compliance of data in connection with the NUH Information Governance Asset register regarding research business data and business data capture systems used by Research & Innovation.
• Actively build working relationships with internal colleagues, as well as wider colleagues around the Trust and region.
Systems Development & Management
• Where appropriate, identify and support developments of business data capture systems used within the department, including liaising with external providers as required.
• Where required, liaise with the Trust ICT and Business Intelligence colleagues to report R&I business data through Trust reporting systems e.g. QlikSense. Provide support to all users of the research business data systems, including the provision of advice and specialist training, the development of guidance and procedures, and user/system administration as required.
• To work closely with key suppliers and build effective relationships.
• Maintain an understanding of the systems used and their functionality, with an ability to troubleshoot issues as required.
