The Department of Art and Media conducts research and artistic activities across a broad range of subjects and themes. These include Art Education, Contemporary Art, Curating, Game Design, New Media, Photography, Visual Communication Design and Visual Culture. The department provides education in Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral levels.
The department was formed in 2022 as a merger of two departments which are both recognized internationally for high-quality artistic outputs, media productions and art pedagogical activities, scholarship, and research. The Department of Art and Media, with approximately 800 students and over 100 staff members, is the biggest department in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture.
We are now looking for a University Teacher or Lecturer/University Lecturer for our Visual Communication Design major.

Your role
The University Teacher or Lecturer/University Lecturer will have an important role in teaching the Visual Communication Design (VCD) majors in the BA and MA programmes in Art and Media. Your teaching will focus on visual communication design and particularly on courses related to typography, typeface design and publication design.
You will work as a member of the teaching team for the Visual communication design major, taking part in delivering courses, tutoring students and in curriculum development. You will also participate in evaluation tasks, supervising theses and take part in student admissions activities.
Co-teaching and co-learning are important aspects of the programme of Art and Media and the VCD major. You should therefore thrive from working collaboratively with other teachers in planning and delivering courses and projects. You should be able to teach both in person and online, successfully using contemporary ways of creating teaching and learning environments.
Your experience
We are looking for a candidate who has experience as a practicing designer as well as teaching in higher education. Your teaching is informed by your practice-based knowledge in visual communication, and you keep up to date with practice and research in the field. You hold a master’s degree in a relevant field of education.
The ideal candidate has an art/design portfolio demonstrating professional skills and insight in visual communication design, with significant merits in one or more of the following areas:
- typography and text design
- typeface design
- publication design.
You are expected to have experience in teaching and planning courses independently, and a proven ability to collaborate well with both faculty and students.
The language of instruction for the BA major in Visual Communication Design is Finnish and for the MA major it is English. We expect you to have fluent oral and written communication skills for teaching and supervising students in both Finnish and in English.
In addition to the expectations above, experience in supervising/advising theses, curriculum planning, and/or academic administration are further merits for your application. We also value evidence of critical and conceptual approaches to visual communication design education, and insight in creating contemporary teaching methods and learning experiences relevant to the field in the future.

Position Summary:
The Department of Visual Arts & Art History at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) invites applications for a nine-month Visiting Instructor position in Graphic Design based on the Fort Lauderdale campus starting in August 2024 and ending at the conclusion of the Spring semester in May 2025.
The successful candidate must be committed to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring. We seek a candidate with demonstrated teaching and professional experience in the following areas: emergent media, interactive design, design theory, visual design principles, and typography. Must be able to teach core competencies in the context of changing practices in social/disruptive media and emergent technologies including, but not exclusive to, AI in design practice. The teaching load is four courses per semester, Fall 2024 and Spring 2025. We are looking for a candidate with a developing record of creative research and an interest in engaging with the wider activities of the department and the university.
