The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is the world’s leading independent authority on global security issues, providing information and analysis on a wide range of international security and political risk questions. The Institute conducts research on the problems of conflict, however caused, that may have a significant military dimension, and analyses international trends, including economic developments, which may have strategic implications. The Institute convenes high-level conferences – such as the annual IISS Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore – that bring together government officials, recognized experts, opinion-formers and business leaders at the most senior level, in order to enhance diplomatic exchanges and to enable the crafting of more effective policy on strategic matters.
The IISS, headquartered in London and with international offices in Bahrain, Germany, Singapore, and the United States, is seeking to appoint a Research Analyst to contribute to the work of the Cyber Power and Future Conflict Programme. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals in the early stages of a career in the field of cyber policy and international relations.
This role reports to the Senior Fellow for Cyber Power and Future Conflict, but the successful candidate will work jointly with colleagues in other IISS offices.
The candidate will have expertise in international cyber policy and the way in which governments, their national security agencies and their armed forces plan for and use cyber capabilities. Ideally, the candidate will have formal qualifications, preferably at Master’s level, in related studies. Responsibilities will include:
- Undertaking detailed research into topics related to the Cyber Power and Future Conflict programme.
- Producing original, authoritative research on relevant topics for IISS publications, including developing smaller designated research projects independently.
- Collection and assessment of data for IISS publications and databases by the Cyber Power and Future Conflict programme.
- Supporting corporate engagements including IISS member briefings, consultancy reports, and programme administration.
Candidates must be fully competent in spoken and written English, and will preferably possess a working knowledge of at least one regional language. As research will be conducted in both English and Chinese/Mandarin, strong Chinese language skills are desirable.
Remuneration
This position is for a fixed term of 2 years and may be considered for renewal at the end of the contract. The salaries offered will be competetive and will be accompanied by benefits including health and life insurance. More information about the IISS can be found at www.iiss.org.

Candidates should submit two documents with their applications: a cover letter, explaining their suitability for the role in one page or less; and a Curriculum Vitae or resume, not exceeding two pages.
The closing date for receipt of applications is 9 July 2023.
Due to the expected volume of applications, only those applicants selected for interview will receive a reply following the acknowledgement email. The IISS is an equal opportunities employer.
