We are seeking to appoint a dynamic Acute Physician or Specialty Physician with an interest in Acute Medicine to join our team of Acute Physicians. Candidates’ dual trained in General Internal Medicine would be welcome to apply. MKUH have opened a new state of the art Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) Unit in October 2022, and this post will be crucial to support the new unit and deliver 7 days a week Same Day Emergency Care.

The successful applicant will join 10 other acute physicians and will work on the medical admission ward, Same day emergency care unit and provide medical in reach and review to medical patients within the Emergency Department.

There are a variety of shifts within acute medicine: These include MAU ward rounds (08:00 – 13:00), ED in reach and medical review (08:00 – 17:00), SDEC (09:00 – 19:00), 1:7 Weekend MAU ward rounds (08:00 – 12:00) 1:14 Weekend SDEC 1(12:00 -16:00). Participating in the general medical on call evening (1:15) and weekends (1:27) is also part of this job. An on call supplement is paid for non-resident overnight cover but the applicant may be expected to return to hospital as an emergency.

This is a 10PA job plan with 1PA core SPA. Up to an additional 1.5PAs of non-core SPA can be agreed in job planning. The SPA component is made up of core activities (appraisal, revalidation, CME, routine departmental meetings etc.) and non-core activities. Non-core activities are discussed and agreed within the Trust (via an agreed tariff and, on occasion, through a personal agreement). Non-core SPA may reflect activities such as educational supervision, research, leadership and quality improvement. This schedule outlines the Direct Clinical Care component (DCC) of the job plan. In addition, the candidate will be on the General medial on call rota and MAU weekend rota. SPA activity and clinical admin can be delivered flexibly around the clinical shifts. SPA activity is outlined in the accompanying table and is delivered over the 5-week cycle rather than per week. It would be expected the successful candidate would organise their own timetable with regards to fitting this activity into the job plan. There would be flexibility to swap shifts to prevent longer periods of work inadvertently caused by the on call rotas.

The successful candidate would not work though these weeks sequentially. Rather based on leave requirements the rota would aim to accommodate consultants shifts based on weekly availability. The shifts are part of an annualised job plan.

Decontamination Team Leader (HSDU)

The department has a vacancy for a full-time team leader. The team leader role encompasses direct supervision of technicians combined with full participation in the operational aspects of the department.

The Decontamination Unit provides a comprehensive decontamination service to theatres, wards and departments within the hospital complex. The unit processes reusable surgical equipment and medical devices.

As a clinical support service, the department operates from 8am – 7pm (Monday – Friday) and 8am – 4pm Saturday. An on-call system is in operation from 4pm Saturday until 8am Monday. This on call system forms part of the team leader role. The on call covers trauma & emergency service for theatres and departments out of hours.

The current shift patterns are 8am – 4pm (early) and 11am – 7pm (late) on a rotational basis but the person appointed would need to flexible and change shifts at short notice to manage the needs of the service.

It is envisaged this post would be suitable for a doctor who has completed foundation training or has 1-2 years of postgraduate experience as a doctor and would like the experience of a rotation in the general medical specialties in a busy acute medical hospital.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a dynamic doctor who wishes to develop their skills as a physician and perhaps would like to be supported to study towards MRCP examinations. For most weeks work will be 08:00 to 17:00 hours, Monday to Friday. The successful candidate will rotate through a variety of medical wards and specialities gaining exposure and education in the areas of general and specialist medicine. Ward placement would usually be for 4-6 months and could involve rotating through general medicine, elderly care, respiratory, diabetes and endocrinology, haematology, cardiology, gastroenterology and acute medicine. He/she will be expected to participate in most of the day to day activities of the department in cooperation with the rest of the medical staff.



In addition there will be involvement in the out of hours rota paid in additional allowances per 2016 Junior doctor contract. In August 2019 we changed the way the on call is designed. The new out of hours rota is now a full shift rota that allows for 4 weeks of ward based (08:00-17:00) clinical activity followed by 2 weeks of intermittent shift work comprising a mixture of days, weekends and night shifts. The rota was designed to significantly improve the work life balance of junior doctors and we have worked hard to ensure that there are no long stretches of work without a break. Currently this rota averages 44 hours per week when averaged over the year but may be subject to minor changes over the course of employment.

The job is mainly ward based but the candidate will have educational exposure to outpatient clinics and the secretarial support to achieve this.

We are looking to expand our Medical Examiner Service in preparation for the introduction of statutory Medical Examiner review of all deaths before registration from 1/4/24.

Routine mortality reviews of all inpatient deaths have been taking place at Milton Keynes University Hospital since 2018 providing scrutiny for all inpatient deaths at the hospital. We have reviewed all Willen hospice deaths since 2022 and have started to review community deaths since 2023 – currently having over half of GP practices on board.

We are a supportive, experienced and dynamic team from a range of clinical backgrounds, and we are now looking to recruit new medical practitioners to the team to deal with the increasing workload that the new statuary change will bring.

Applications are invited from any medically qualified practitioner who has been on the full GMC register for a minimum of five years.

As a new Medical Examiner, you will be supported by the team, and will shadow a current Medical Examiner for the first few weeks. Training is hosted by the Royal College of Pathologists with peer support being provided in the new role by the existing medical examiners. This is a highly rewarding role that provides essential safeguards within the death certification process, provides support to the bereaved, supports correct referral to HM Coroner and supports the system wide learning and improvement.

Medical examiners (MEs) are appropriately trained doctors who will proportionately scrutinise deceased patients’ records against the Cause of Death offered by the certifying practitioner. They are responsible for ensuring that
• the Cause of Death is accurate, and meets the legal requirements for registration,
• there is no requirement for referral of the case to the Coroner for review
• any concerns about the death raised by any concerned party are reviewed and actioned accordingly
• that any concerns about the standard of care received by the deceased are escalated appropriately for investigation for system-wide learning

Medical Examiners are not allowed to scrutinise the death of any patient whose care they have been involved in.

• To be part of the Pharmacy team and work to enable the objectives of the department and the Trust to be achieved
• To communicate effectively and promptly with all members of the Pharmacy teams and where necessary, clinical multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of medicines management/optimisation and supply services to patients and colleagues across the local health system.
• To act in a manner consistent with the General Pharmaceutical Council standards for Pharmacy professionals and work within own limits of authority and knowledge to provide safe, effective and timely work and support for colleagues including communication of complex and sensitive information
• To always work within the defined policies and Standard Operating Procedures and where appropriate suggesting and contributing to changes made with the agreement of Pharmacy Technicians or Pharmacists
• To participate in relevant departmental meetings and contribute to effective communication within the department
• To be aware of and comply with all department and Divisional procedures
• To participate in the department rota and weekend and bank holiday services.

Senior Sister / Charge Nurse

Band 7 £43,742 - £50,056 per annum,pro rata if part-time

Hours:37.5 hours per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

We are looking for a proactive, motivated individual, with exceptional leadership skills, who thrives in an ever-changing environment. The successful applicant will join a hardworking, enthusiastic team, who strive to provide high quality patient centred care in the emergency department that sees over 100,000 patients a year.

• To develop and maintain a high standard of nursing care in accordance with Trust/Divisional policies.
• To be actively involved in the management and development of the ED (Emergency Department).
• To work with the Senior Nursing/Medical team to ensure that issues relating to clinical governance are addressed within the department.
• To provide expert clinical leadership with the support of Matrons to all staff to ensure quality service delivery.
• To communicate effectively and co-ordinate multidisciplinary work.
• To continually develop and update professional skills within the scope of professional practice framework.
• To be responsible for implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the Nursing Strategy at Unit level.
• To deputize for the Matrons when necessary.
