About the role
In this role, your responsibilities will include working as part of the Cultured Therapies team at BiomeBank to help support the laboratory to drive drug discovery and work on developing new microbial therapeutics. Your key responsibilities will include:
Regular processing of stool samples for anaerobic culturing and next generation sequencing within a PC2 laboratory
- Working in an anaerobic chamber for extended periods of time
- Bulk preparation of media, plates and reagents for microbial culturing
- Inoculation and isolation of microbial colonies, confirmatory tests on microorganisms, PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA quantitation, preparing samples to send for next generation sequencing
- Biochemistry methods for testing microbial cultures
- Recording findings and analysing results
Ordering and performing stocktake of laboratory consumables
Calibration and preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment
Office-based work including creating high quality laboratory reports to ensure compliance with operational quality standards and procedures.

Desirable skills, experience and attributes for this role:
- Bachelor Degree or higher qualification in microbiology, molecular biology or related field from a recognised tertiary institution
- Experience working in a PC2 microbiology laboratory
- Experience and proven ability to perform aseptic techniques, media preparation, culturing, molecular techniques such as PCR and gel electrophoresis
- Experience in standard analytical techniques, such as mass spectrophotometry.
- Sound knowledge of physicochemical testing methods and concepts
- Excellent organisational and time management skills
- Ability to work in an anaerobic chamber for extended periods of time
- Display initiative and problem solving skills
- A positive attitude and an ability to independently troubleshoot general laboratory hurdles
- An ability to multitask and prioritise tasks according to company requirements
- Well-developed oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment, while working autonomously to deliver outcomes within specific timeframes
- Ability to work flexible working hours to assure time-sensitive experimental procedures are completed
