Position Overview: Cedar Primary School is seeking a competent Science Laboratory Support Officer to join our team. The selected candidate will play a vital role in supporting inquiry-based learning in Science and ensuring the smooth operation of our school's science laboratories. This position requires an individual with a strong background in laboratory management and administration, excellent communication skills, and a passion for enabling hands-on learning experiences for students.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Support inquiry-based learning for Science by assisting teachers in the preparation of materials and apparatus for practical lessons and assessments.
2. Manage, operate, and maintain the science laboratories and associated learning environments, such as the school garden and science corners, to ensure a conducive learning environment.
3. Procure equipment and materials required for science practical lessons, maintain an inventory list of consumables, and manage inventory levels effectively.
4. Ensure laboratory safety standards are adhered to at all times and serve as a certified first aider when necessary.
5. Assist in logistic support and supervision during classes, workshops, and events involving the use of laboratory tools.
6. Provide general office support including reception duties, handling telephone calls, attending to students, parents, and visitors, updating sick bay records, photocopying documents, filing, and stationery management.
7. Undertake any other duties assigned by the School Leaders/Administrative Manager to support the overall functioning of the school.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Singapore citizen or Permanent Resident.
• NITEC Diploma or GCE ‘O’ Level Certificate.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience as a lab technician in a primary school setting.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office applications.
• Ability to handle live specimens, such as insects and chemicals, safely and responsibly.

Job Scope for Science Laboratory Assistant duties/responsibilities include but not restricted to the following:

Teaching & Learning Support

• To prepare science apparatus and equipment for science experiments
• To assist/support teachers in the conduct of science experiments and science enrichment programmes which include Applied Learning Programme (ALP), E2K, hydroponics and eco trails
• To assist teachers in the preparation of resources for science competitions and projects and science-related CCAs
• To monitor the operations of the Hydroponics System
• To support in the preparation of resources for science department events
• To ensure the safety of the science rooms by keeping updated on safety guidelines and adhering to safety protocols on the use of equipment and materials

Inventory Management Support

• To monitor the utilisation rate of the science rooms, science resources and apparatus.
• To conduct stock-takes of science resources, apparatus, equipment and consumables
• To check on usability of science apparatus and equipment and collate list of damaged items to be repaired or replaced
• To collate items to be replenished for teaching and learning of science
• To monitor the loaning out and returning of desk copies by science teachers
• To maintain the cleanliness of the science rooms and Hydroponics System
• Any other duties assigned by School Leaders / HOD Science

Job Scope for Operations Support Office duties/responsibilities include but not restricted to the following:

Student matters

• To assist student in times of need for eg, lost & found items, change of uniform, cleaning of students with vomiting, locating teacher/classroom/ parent
• To collect items from classroom after school if needs arise
• To escort student for medical treatment if needs arise

Operations

• To maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the General Office, classrooms & special rooms
• To disinfect rooms as and when required
• To assist in logistic matters for eg, preparation of rooms for school events and functions including of shifting of furniture.
• To assist delivery and distributing external materials to classrooms.
• To assist in disinfecting of furniture and equipment during times of emergency or pandemic
• To comply with any requirement or cleaning schedule & standards set by the school
• To escort contractors if needs arise
• To perform gate duties during school arrival and dismissal times and during times of heavy traffic.

General Administration

• To dispatch mails, information and students’ items
• To assist in packing of items for school
• Any other duties assigned by School Leaders / OMs / AMs

The Personnel shall minimally have the following qualifications, skills and experience:

Science Laboratory Assistant

• GCE ‘O’ Level Certificate or equivalent qualification (with at least 1 combined Science subject).
• At least 3 years of experience working in a primary school environment as science lab assistant Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Meticulous with good planning and organising abilities
• Knowledge in the preparation and setting up of apparatus and materials in both Life Science and Physical Science
• Interacts well with students

Operations Support Office

• Minimum 1 year experience working in a primary school environment.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
