The Trauma & Orthopaedic service at UHCW is comprehensive, spanning 79 beds across three wards. Our facilities cater to patients with simple to major traumatic injuries in the trauma unit and general to complex elective day case surgery across UHCW and St Cross Hospital.

As a level one major trauma centre, UHCW offers round-the-clock emergency and trauma surgery, welcoming polytrauma patients from the surrounding region. The department is equipped with a tertiary referral centre, a dedicated major trauma enhanced care unit, and a hyper-acute hip fracture unit. Moreover, UHCW houses a total of 33 theatres spread across Coventry and Rugby sites, featuring state-of-the-art Robotic surgery to address cases that were once deemed inoperable.

The Department of Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery provides specialist musculoskeletal care and often collaborates with the Rheumatology, Physiotherapy, Radiology, and Paediatrics departments to ensure patients are well supported. In this role, post holder will have the opportunity to work with over 30 Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultants, supported by Clinical Fellows, Specialist Registrars, Associate Specialists, and Staff grades, including sub-specialties within orthopaedics such as complex trauma, revision arthroplasty, plastics and hand and wrist.

The primary role for the post holder is to lead on the management and provision of a comprehensive, high quality pharmacy service to Trauma and orthopaedics wards and specialties. Post holder will also support our pharmacy clinical services improvement projects such as development of pre-op assessment service, day case pathways at UHCW and St Cross hospital and Community diagnostic centre development (CDC). We are in the fortunate position, after service investment, to advertise for an exceptional Pharmacist to join our friendly and progressive pharmacy team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. This is a unique role in which you can develop your specialist skillset and advance your clinical skills.

Main Duties/ Responsibilities 1. To participate in and supervise the generation and checking of new MOSAIQ SACT protocol templates. 2. To review and update existing SACT protocol templates, and oversee the modification and maintenance of all treatment protocols. 3. To participate in and support the wider pharmacy and clinical team with training and usage of the chemotherapy prescribing system within cancer services. 4. Train and assess Spoke and Hub MOSAIQ Pharmacy staff to operate within their competence with regard to SACT protocol template work. 5. To oversee and manage the generic MOSAIQ Pharmacy email inbox. 6. To practice as an expert practitioner, providing advice and consultancy to patients, healthcare professionals and other agencies relating to pharmaceutical aspects of your clinical speciality within the department and on the wards/clinical areas. 7. To participate in outpatient clinics as a non-medical prescriber (as required and funding permitting). Provide oral chemotherapy pre-treatment consultations (as required and funding permitting). 8. To operate as an authorised pharmacist within the Pharmacy Aseptic Unit, handling and final checking chemotherapy and other aseptically dispensed/ manufactured medicines. 9. To participate in chemotherapy screening (clinical verification) of prescriptions as per department rota. 10. To support all aspects of the cancer drug commissioning arrangements locally. This will include funded drugs and those available via a compassionate use or similar scheme. 11. To participate in, and if needed, lead on the training of Pharmacy staff within the department relating to cancer services. 12. To participate in, and if needed, lead on commitments relating to intrathecal therapy. 13. To support the palliative care clinical service provided to the Hospices at Warwick and Coventry (as required). Pharmacy duties and Responsibilities: 1. Check prescriptions for clarity, safety and efficacy on wards, in dispensaries and the aseptic suite and when necessary take accurate drug histories to facilitate this. Query with, and provide the prescriber with appropriate information to effect a change in the prescription when clinically required, to ensure patients safety and effective therapy. 2.Provide information to nursing and medical staff across the trust on any aspect of medicines policy ensuring safe practice. Provide information to patients on allocated wards or in dispensaries concerning their medication and answer any resulting questions or queries. 3.Provide when necessary, through checking dispensing or supervision of technicians, an efficient medication supply service from any of the pharmacy departments, including the aseptic suite. 4.Ensure patients discharge medication is accurate and dispensed in advance of the patients discharge, by recording the patients medication on the GP discharge prescription and conveying to the GP all necessary information concerning the patient medication to ensure a safe transfer to primary care. Reducing pharmaceutical waste by utilising patients own drugs in the discharge process. 5. Within your designated clinical area of responsibility, ensure best practice and clinical governance is applied to drug therapy by providing medical and nursing staff with: a. Appropriate drug information b. Support in writing clinical guidelines c. Participation in and delivery of education and training d. Undertaking clinical audit and practice research e. Ensuring procedures for the introduction and monitoring of new drugs are followed f. Monitoring of drug expenditure and provision of advice on the financial implications of changes in practice g. Train, and act as role model to pharmacy staff allocated to specialty h. Due to service expansion, we are advertising for a brand-new post. This is a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic Pharmacist to join our large and friendly pharmacy team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust. The successful post holder will be part of our highly valued and skilled Aseptic Services, Oncology/ Haematology and Palliative Care team.

UHCW has been selected as a regional intestinal failure centre to provide specialist services to adult patients in the West Midlands. Our aseptic unit will be preparing parenteral nutrition (PN) to support these patients. This exciting new role will primarily support and develop the PN service and will involve work both within the aseptic unit and clinical work outside of pharmacy. The successful candidate will be trained in all aspects of aseptic services including chemotherapy and learn about quality assurance of aseptic preparation. There will be opportunities to be involved in staff training and the expansion of this service.

The ideal candidate will be ambitious, self-motivated and organised with excellent communication, time management and interpersonal skills. The post provides an opportunity to develop clinical and technical skills within a large acute teaching hospital. There are also developmental opportunities through contributing to a specialty group; governance, guidance, budget and local policy.
