We are looking for a Research Specialist to join Dr. Moisés Expósito-Alonso at our University of California at Berkeley location. Moisés Expósito-Alonso investigates the genetic processes driving plant species adaptation in response to new environments caused by climate change. Centered on the model plant species Arabidopsis thaliana, Expósito Alonso’s team integrates long-term evolution through experiments in field sites worldwide with genomics to understand the speed and predictability of rapid evolution. By employing genetics and synthetic biology approaches based on gene editing, they explore the gene pathways underlying plant climate adaptation. In this role, you will work collaboratively with Dr. Moisés Expósito Alonso to coordinate research projects in plant genetics and synthetic biology. We are looking for someone who is highly independent and can run the plant facilities and wet laboratory tasks such as orders, organize projects, conduct gene cloning, DNA extractions, libraries, sequencing, and plant transformation. Manage lab safety programs to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations. Use software applications to assemble, manipulate, format and/or perform statistical analyses of complex data in collaboration with computational biologists in the lab.

What you’ll do:
Manage day-to-day activities within the research laboratory, including such activities as insuring operation of essential equipment, making sure adequate supplies are available for routine experimental procedures, reviewing budgets, etc.
Act as liaison between lab and HHMI and host institution administrative offices on issues such as budget management, fixed asset inventories, compliance, purchasing, use of host accounts, etc.
Develop laboratory guidelines; maintain procedures manuals; and /or evaluate new materials and equipment.
Train incoming personnel in proper lab conduct. May train others in technical areas and complex processes.
Carry out and/or coordinate research projects. Set up and evaluate new laboratory techniques and capacity.
Plan for and provide working supervision to the work of Research Technicians, Graduate Students, or other laboratory personnel.
Establishes a positive atmosphere towards growth of lab trainees.
What you bring:
A Master of Science degree, preferably PhD degree in life or physical sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
One year of experience as a Research Specialist I or equivalent (Five years of related work experience).
