A Fire Effects Monitor (GS-04 Biological Science Technician) follows instructions and standardized procedures to collect and organize field data. Ensures adequate quality control of data collected and performs routine and recurring testing of collected samples. Makes field observations of natural resource conditions. Provides results to higher-level specialists for analysis. Provides logistical support and area orientation for contract or cooperating scientists. Installs, operates, maintains, inventories, and calibrates resource management equipment. Orders replacement parts, new equipment, and supplies. Utilizes a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, and report data and other resource management information, including natural science research and long-term monitoring projects. Prepares a wide variety of recurring correspondence, internal reports, and other documents from information obtained from office staff, files and other sources and reviews and finalizes documents prepared by others.
A Fire Effects Monitor (GS-05 Biological Science Technician)establishes monitoring plots in a variety of vegetation/fuel types in accordance with established guidelines and directions. Monitors plots and makes field observation of resource conditions. Prepares fire behavior monitoring documentation on forms for prescribed burns. Identifies grasses, herbs, shrubs and trees to species. Catalogs, labels and stores plant materials collected during the season. Prepares field maps and photographs from the ground. Enters natural resource field data into a personal computer. May be required to operate light vehicles and 4X4s.

*In addition to the base salary, you will receive a 3.53% cost of living allowance for Denali, AK or a 2.01% cost of living allowance for Fairbanks, AK. This allowance is subject to annual review, adjustment, and gradual decrease.

MAJOR DUTIES:
At the GS-5, GS-6 and GS-7 levels you will:
Install, operate, and maintain resource management equipment (e.g., tools, traps, and sampling, monitoring, photographic, and laboratory equipment), inventory equipment, evaluate quality assurance compliance, and calibrate equipment as necessary to assist biologists in executing and reporting of fishery activities.
Collect and report fishery data using standardized data collection procedures and equipment, utilizing a variety of computer programs to compile and report data and other resource management information, including research and long-term monitoring projects.
Provide information to other employees and visitors about the natural resource management program.
In addition to the above duties at the GS-6 and GS-7 level you will also: analyze fishery data and test conditions; may develop and present related interpretive programs to the public; provide advice, assistance and training to students, and volunteers; and prepare diagrams, charts and graphs.
In addition to the above duties at the GS-7 level you will also: prepare reports and act as a crew leader on a variety of fisheries projects.
Additional Position Information:
In addition to working in an office/field setting, this job could involve hiking with up to 50 lbs. for up to 15 miles per day over rough terrain; lifting heavy weights (up to 50 lbs); working in inclement (hot, cold, snow, wind, rain) weather conditions. Field work includes exposure to biting insects and potentially dangerous animals.
Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required. Heavy items (e.g., packs and equipment up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis.
Work Environment: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field. Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, snakes and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for occasional/situational telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with prior supervisory approval.

Government Housing may be available at - Bartlett Cove, Copper Center and Slana, Alaska duty stations.
