The Laboratory for Translational and Molecular Imaging (LTMI) at Duke-NUS Medical School is looking for a Research Assistant who will execute preclinical in vivo multimodal imaging studies, including nuclear medicine (PET/SPET/CT) in the context of a multidisciplinary laboratory to aid in the evaluation, validation, and translation of novel methodologies.

The selected candidate will be tasked with management and execution of day-to-day operations of imaging-related laboratory functions, including but not limited to laboratory maintenance, study design and execution, data analysis, as well as the communication of project updates. The position provides excellent opportunities for personal growth in project management and cross-disciplinary learning within the emerging fields of immuno-oncology and infectious diseases, as well as extensive exposure to preclinical and broader research ecosystems throughout Singapore.

• Partner with group members and external stakeholders in the exploration of research literature, definition of project scope and design of experiments.
• Hands-on execution of preclinical in vivo imaging experiments in a collaborative, matrixed environment involving parallel assays and end points.
• Development and execution of relevant and potentially novel data processing and analysis methodologies befitting the needs of a specific project.
• Active communication with external stakeholders with the timely production of comprehensive research reports, including the generation of relevant data visualisations for publication or presentation purposes.
• Maintenance and execution of institutional SOPs and records in relation to radiation and animal safety.

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, Radiologic Sciences, Pharmacology or related Biomedical Degree with at least 2 years of experience in an in vivo imaging or pharmacology laboratory. Candidates with higher credentials may be considered for more senior appointments.
• Prior research expertise in academic or industrial projects utilising imaging techniques, animal husbandry, development and evaluation of rodent animal models or biomarkers/tracers. Individuals familiar with multiple imaging modalities (PET/SPECT/CT/optical) and analysis workflows (e.g. PMOD/AMIDE/Imalytics Preclinical software) are preferred but not required.
• Handle radioactive materials, including injection to animals and follow-up necropsy for bio-distribution studies and/or ex vivo assessment (e.g. cryo-sectioning, IHC, IF, H&E staining).
• Project management skills with an ability to navigate complex experimental designs.
• Comfortable with various computer operating systems and programs, including management of imaging data.

Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for a Research Associate position in the Department of Synthetic Biology Translational Research Program, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Appointments will be on a 1-year contract in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Purpose of the post

The Research Associate (RAssoc) will be working closely with the Principal Investigator and a team of researchers on bioprocessing and downstream process development. The RAssoc’s principal role will be to assist in method development and process optimization for research projects requiring bacterial and yeast fermentation as well as provide technical support and training to laboratory users.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Associate is expected to:

1. Design and execute fermentation experiments to optimize the production of target compounds/proteins.
2. Develop and scale-up bioprocesses for the cultivation of microbial strains (bacterial, conventional and non-conventional yeasts) from benchtop to pilot scale fermentation.
3. Conduct process optimization studies to improve fermentation performance, yield, and productivity.
4. Lead efforts in developing scalable downstream processes, including but not limited to filtration, chromatography, and other purification techniques.
5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of strain engineering to fermentation and downstream processes.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Analyse data from fermentation and purification experiments, interpret results, and present findings to the team.
2. Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during fermentation or purification processes.
3. Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure adherence to good manufacturing practices (GMP) and safety guidelines.
4. Stay updated with the latest advancements in bioprocessing and downstream purification technologies and apply them to enhance processes and productivity.
5. Provide technical expertise and support to team members and contribute to the overall success of the group’s translational projects.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

• Masters in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or a related field.
• Proven track record of successfully optimizing and scaling-up fermentation processes for the production of compounds/proteins.
• Expertise in downstream purification techniques, such as filtration, chromatography, and other purification techniques.
• Hands-on experience with various bioreactors, fermenters, and other bioprocessing equipment.
• Strong understanding of safety protocols in bioprocessing.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in data analysis, statistical tools (JMP), and design of experiments (DoE) for process optimization is an advantage.
• Preferably have experience with process simulation and modelling.
• Be able to work both independently and in teams.

In its pilot phase, this effort has completed whole-genome sequencing of 10K individuals, and has delivered a catalogue of common genetic variants across Singapore’s three main ethnic populations (Wu D. et al. 2019, Wong et al. 2022 in preparation). Now, the challenge is to scale up genetic data production and develop the infrastructure needed the next phases of the National Precision Medicine Program (100K individuals by 2024, then 1 million individuals in 2025 and beyond). By joining our multi-disciplinary, team, you will be involved in efforts to set up a high-throughput data analysis workflow, devise solutions for managing and controlling access to petabytes of information, and eventually apply the developed tools to deliver one of the largest population genomics efforts in South Asia to date.
