Then, using these knowledge bases, we will develop AI tools to automatically generate promising ways of combining humans and AI systems to perform different tasks. In the long run, we believe these tools will help rapidly (a) identify use cases for new AI capabilities, (b) specify effective processes and task allocations to humans and computers in a given situation, and (c) identify innovative ways to combine people and AI to solve business and societal problems.

This project aims to develop a real-time blood analysis and diagnostic platform using an integrated microfluidic chip. This platform uses precision microfluidic technology to process and profile the biological activity of white blood cells which is related to a host of inflammatory conditions ranging from diabetes, sepsis to leukemia. The platform developed will enable point-of-care diagnosis of diseases and this project will accelerate the platform from bench to bedside through the development, deployment and testing of clinical samples.
This Engineering position offers a rare opportunity to bridge the gap between laboratory discovery of new technologies and real-world implementation of clinical deployment and testing.
The engineer is responsible for the design, prototype, manufacturing and testing of the medical device. This involves the use of with computer-aided design prototyping, setting specifications and assembly of mechnical/electrical components, testing and deployment of device for field testing.
Responsibilties include:
- To work closely with a team of clinical, mechanical/software engineers and data scientist for the medical device design and prototyping. Gather feedbacks on prototype designs by end-users.
- To Validate designs by analysing data gathered from component or system level testing. Use benchmarking techniques to characterise component and device performance.
- To ensure proper documentation of design history files and standardization of data storage for reports, presentations, technical and administrative documents.
- To source for vendors and components to ensure manufacturability and cost of medical device.
- To support the team for maintenance of equipment, inventory and purchases.
- Bachelors/Masters or Ph.D. in Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical Engineering, or a relevant field with experience developing and supporting embedded systems.
- Minimum Bachelor's or Master's degree with 2+ years of work experience or Ph.D. with 0+ years of experience.
- Rapid prototyping experience in areas such as 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, injection molding, microcontroller/microprocessor programming and relevant skills in embedded system.
- Prefered experience in commercial manufacturing, R&D project management and hardware testing/certification.
- Excellent debugging skills and strong ability to root cause, isolate and solve software/hardware system issues.
- Fluent in C++, Python (3.X) and relavent coding languages for software-hardware integration.
- A desire to deliver a quality and innovative medical diagnostic product that improves many people’s lives.

We are seeking one or more graduate research interns (ideally full time students currently pursuing a PhD degree) in computer science to join the “Towards an Immersive Workplace” project. This project is part of Task “T1” of a five-year, ambitious research program on "Mens, Manus and Machina—How AI Empowers People, Institutions and Cities in Singapore (M3S)."
Successful applicants for this position will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research that builds new capabilities for AI-enhanced human-robot interaction, with a special focus on supporting efficient and collaborative spatial/3D sensing and comprehension in industrial environments, such as airport tarmacs and logistics warehouses. The end goal is to build exciting new capabilities that allow robots and humans to work together, interactively and in close proximity, with the spatial sensing helping agents embedded in robots understand and situate human instructions, queries and commands, issued naturally in untethered, field settings.
The research intern, working part-time (10-16 hours per week) will be specifically involved in the development of new, energy-efficient and reliable spatial sensing technologies, such as LIDAR (3D). The goal is to allow teams of humans and robots, working in close proximity in a common physical environment, to achieve appropriate spatial awareness. The research will focus on addressing challenges such as (i) interference between multiple LIDAR sensors, when operating in a shared physical environment, (ii) optimized sharing of LIDAR-sensed point cloud data among collaborating peers, and (iii) resource-efficient augmentation of LIDAR sensing via use of additional cheaper sensors (e.g., RGB and thermal cameras). These techqniues will progressively be combined with additional research, being developed in complementary efforts within the overall T1 project, that tackles topics such as non-obtrusive human attention capture and efficient multi-modal DNN comprehension for human instructions, to support more accurate understanding of human instructions and preferences, whether explicit or implicit.
The T1 team is led by distinguished scholars, including Profs. Sanjay Sarma, Daniela Rus and Jinhua Zhang from MIT; and Prof. Archan Misra from Singapore Management University. The proposed research described above will be spearheaded by Prof. Misra.

SMART CAMP (Critical Analytics for Manufacturing Personalized-Medicine) is a interdisciplinary research programme in Singapore (CREATE international research campus and innovation hub) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). SMART CAMP addresses key technology bottlenecks in cell therapy manufacturing: (i) critical quality attributes of safe, effective cell therapy products; and (ii) integrated process analytics to monitor and modulate those attributes. While cell therapies are poised to transform healthcare for both the industry and the patient, there remain many outstanding scientific and technical challenges to significant global impact that this R&D programme addresses. This high-impact focus includes measurement and feedback control of processing parameters (process analytic technologies, or PAT) that contribute to cell viability and function during cell proliferation, and the measurement at intermediate and final steps of the cell product properties correlated with positive therapeutic outcomes (critical quality attributes, or CQA).
This interdisciplinary team comprises engineers, biologists, clinicians, manufacturing, and data analytics experts from multiple MIT academic units, and multiple Singapore-based universities, research centres of excellence, and hospitals who are experienced at translational demonstrations of technologies in safety-regulated industries such as cell therapies.
CAMP’s unique, enabling and cross-cutting capabilities include cell and clinical biology, microfluidics, real-time optics and spectroscopies, 3D-printed devices, process analytics, data analytics, and bioinformatics. This programme will demonstrate these approaches required of cell-based personalized medicine through three translational testbeds (three Flagship Projects), ultimately facilitating access for more patients to life-saving, approved cell therapies for currently intractable health challenges. These flagship projects will address allogeneic and autologous cell therapy products, including but not limited to cell sources including adult stem/progenitor cells and immune cells for treatment of specific cancers, tissue degeneration, and autoimmune diseases.

Rapid and sensitive detection of low-abundance pathogens is required for many fields, including infectious disease, environment surveillance and food safety monitoring. However, the low abundance (<10/mL) of pathogens in large-volume crude samples critically limits the detection performance of even the most sensitive technique like digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR). Therefore, an efficient enrichment of low-abundance pathogens from crude samples is critical to improving downstream detection. Prof. Jongyoon Han (Principal Investigator under SMART AMR and CAMP IRGs) and Dr. Yaoping Liu (Senior Postdoctoral Associate under Prof. Han) team has developed an efficient electrostatic microfiltration (EM)-based sample processing to realize the detection of low abundance bacteria (<10 CFU) from an ultra-large volume (as high as 500 mL). Recently, the team is working on various samples to expand the impact and has received quite a few collaboration requests from both academic institute and company. There requires some optimization/customization of the system for different samples and interfaces with different downstream detection platforms.

This Research Engineer will join the abovementioned optimization of the EM-based processing of different samples including wastewater, soil sediment or clinical biofluids to interface with downstream detectors including digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR), nanopore sequencing. Once the workflow optimized, the Research Engineer will perform the sample preparation collaborating with different groups under instruction of the supervisor. The goal is to significantly (by at least 2-3 orders of magnitudes) increase the detection sensitivity and decrease the assay time by implementing better sample separation and concentration. This topic is focused and pursued in both the fundamental research and industry areas. There will be opportunity to go to international conference for exchange and collaboration enhancement.
