We envision an Oregon where every child can read and is empowered to succeed. Since 1992, SMART has been pairing caring, adult volunteers with children in need of reading support and books to take home and keep. SMART volunteers read one-on-one with students weekly during the school year, modeling a love of reading and building children’s reading skills and self-confidence in a positive, child-driven environment.

Pros: The best part of working for SMART Reading is undoubtedly the mission. Seeing the direct impact on kids' reading levels across Oregon communities is very motivating. The staff are generally passionate and collaborative, and there's a real sense of teamwork. The flexibility in how we manage our programs, especially with remote options for some roles, is a significant plus.
Cons: While the team is great, leadership communication could be more transparent, especially regarding strategic decisions and long-term planning for the organization. Sometimes, unclear direction can lead to confusion on priorities. I also found that during peak program periods, workload can become quite intense, and support structures could be strengthened.
