Créée en 1991, l'Andra (Agence nationale pour la gestion des déchets radioactifs) est un établissement public à caractère industriel et commercial (Épic) dont les missions ont été complétées par la loi de programme n°2006-739 du 28 juin 2006 relative à la gestion durable des matières et déchets radioactifs.
Placée sous la tutelle des ministères en charge de l'énergie, de la recherche et de l'environnement, l'Andra est chargée de la gestion à long terme des déchets radioactifs produits en France. Dans le cadre de cette mission, l'Agence met son expertise et son savoir-faire au service de l'État pour concevoir des solutions de gestion et exploiter des centres de stockage de déchets radioactifs en protégeant l'homme et l'environnement de l'impact de ces déchets sur le long terme.
